Matthew Edward Murphy

Matthew Edward Murphy 1987 - 2024 Long Island, Maine – It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved Matthew, or “Murph,” or “Matti,” as he was affectionately called. He was born on December 13, 1987, to Barbara and Michael Murphy. He attended schools in New Hampshire and Maine, where he attended the University of Southern Maine. Matti loved the outdoors and grew up learning how to ski, snowboard, waterski, sail and crew, how to pitch a tent for the night, and hiking. He had a love for animals, especially dogs, and they always gravitated toward him. Matti was always an independent thinker, but he was never one to push his ideals on anyone else. It has been said many times that he had two ears and one mouth, because he would quietly participate in a conversation and come up with a perfectly suited one liner. Matti lived independently at a very early age and made many friends along the way, including a long stint at The Great Lost Bear. Matti was always open to trying new things and pushing himself to learn. He was a well-read man that enjoyed a good novel, but also a “How-to” book in his leisure time. In 2019, he co-founded CarHop, a food and beverage delivery system with his partner, Thomas Brems. He became very successful and he learned many managerial and business skills. He decided to take a different direction and moved to Long Island to take up the craft of building, where he instantly made friends and enjoyed the softball team, the Bakehouse, the infamous rib off, and joined the Long Island Fire Department. This was a great new adventure for him and he loved it and all the people. We all wish he could have spent more time here. Matti is predeceased by his father, Michael; his maternal grandparents, Edward and Louise Libby; and his paternal grandfather, Martin Murphy. He is survived by his mother, Barbara and her husband John Condon; sister, Sarah Murphy; aunts Betty Libby, Joan Libby, and Karen Sebastian and her husband Steve; cousins, Samantha Brown, Nicholas Brown, and Kendall Sebastian; uncles Thomas Murphy and Rob Irish Murphy, and grandmother Charlene. Matti’s family and friends will celebrate his life on July 13, 2024, at 2:30 PM at the Evergreen United Methodist Church on Long Island, Maine, followed by a reception at the Hardshell, 3 Garfield St, Long Island. Family and friends will be sharing stories of Matti’s memory. Arrangements are under the direction of Conroy-Tully Walker of Portland. To view Matti’s memorial page or to leave a condolence, please visit www.ConroyTullyWalker.com. To Matti’s family and friends, “There is surely reason to feel sorrow, but to live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Matti’s memory to: Long Island Fire and Rescue Association, P.O. Box 285, Long Island, ME 04050
