CAPE ELIZABETH - Mary Jane Mullen, 78, of Cape Elizabeth died Wednesday July 6, 2011 at her residence surrounded by her family. She was born in Portland, a daughter of John J. and Helen J. O'Connor Connors. Mary Jane attended parochial schools and was a 1951 graduate of Cathedral High School. On September 18, 1954 she married Martin T. Mullen at St. Joseph's Church in Portland. She and her husband soon began to raise a family. Together they had seven children. Family activities of her children and later grandchildren were very important to Mary Jane. She enjoyed attending all of the school activities of her children and grandchildren. Sunday dinner with her family was a ritual. Mary Jane was employed as a telephone operator with New England Telephone Company. She retired from AT T in 1990 after 25 years of service. She was a communicant of St. Bartholomew Church and a member of the Women's Group. Mary Jane was a volunteer at St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen. She enjoyed reading, knitting and travel. Trips to Peaks Island held a special place in her heart. She was predeceased by her husband Martin T. Mullen in 2008. Survivors include four daughters, Sharon Mullen Campbell and her husband Bob of Cape Elizabeth, Susan Gillis and her husband Mark of South Portland, Mary Knutsen and her husband Eric of South Portland, Barbara Romano of South Portland; three sons, Marty Mullen and his wife Heather of Cape Elizabeth, Peter Mullen and his wife Debbie of South Portland, Christopher Mullen of Cape Elizabeth; 13 grandchildren, Amanda, Andrew, Sam, Max, Anthony, Sophia, Elise, Nathan, Connor, Riley, Brandy, Emma and Joshua; several nephews and one niece. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Roger Inhorn and the staff of Mercy Oncology, especially Carolyn Murphy and Sara Kavanagh. Visiting hours will be held 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited 10:45 a.m. Monday at the South Portland Chapel followed by a 11:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Bartholomew Church , Two Lights Road, Cape Elizabeth. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Cape Elizabeth.
