SOUTH PORTLAND - Mary Eva McGinnis, 92, died peacefully on February 17, 2013 at her home. She was born in Ramer, TN, the daughter of Evan and Linda (King) Jaggers. As a child she moved to St. Louis, MO. Being a free spirit, as a young adult she travelled to Beverly Hills, CA, where she found employment at a large department store. Rumor has it that she beguiled many an up and coming movie star. In 1945, with the end of WWII, she married Lawrence T. McGinnis in South Portland. Mary supported her husband's military career from 1945-1963, moving every two to three years. After Lawrence's retirement in 1962, they settled in South Portland. In 1963, she and her husband opened Larry's Variety Store in Willard Square, where she worked until her early retirement in the 1970's. Mary was an avid reader, and enjoyed taking walks through her neighborhood, and talking with her many friends. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her beloved husband; daughter, Catherine Hincks; and two sisters, Vergie Aubuchon and Osa McAllister. She is survived by her son, Larry of Boulder, CO; five grandchildren, Gillian McGinnis, David, Aaron, and Noah Hincks, and Maura Kardish; two great grandchildren; two sisters, Cornelia "Connie" Chrusciel of Troy, IL, and Lessie Matchett of St. Louis, MO; and many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held from 2-4 pm on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A funeral service will be held at the Chapel on Thursday at 9 am. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.Online condolences may be expressed below.
