Scarborough- Mary R. LeGage, 85, of Black Point Road, died peacefully on Monday, October 25, 2021 at the Gosnell Hospice House with her loving family by her side. Mary was born in Portland, Maine on March 10, 1936 the daughter of the late Laurence H. Reynolds and Eileen Jane Gallant. She graduated from St. Joseph's Grammar School, Lewiston High School in the class of 1954, she attended Bates College, graduated from Gorham State Teachers College in 1958 and then earned her Master's Degree from the University of Maine at Presque Isle in 1979. She began her teaching career in Westbrook from 1958 to 1960. She then took twelve years off to raise her family. She returned to teaching as a homebound tutor and began a full time career in 1978 at North School, teaching in the Portland Public Schools at Jack Elementary, Nathan Clifford Elementary, and King Middle School, until her retirement in 2000. In 1960 she married the love of her life, David N. LeGage, a college classmate who became an Education Leader in the Portland Public Schools. Mary was a long time member of the Maine Education Association and the National Education Association along with various clubs and organizations in Greater Portland. In 1982 she received the Superintendent's Award for Excellence in Teaching. She was longtime communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Portland. She loved to travel, tend to her vegetable garden and always enjoyed going out to dinner with family, friends and her many teaching colleagues. She will be long remembered as a kind, giving, and friendly person. Mary was predeceased by her husband, David N. LeGage in 1996. She is survived by a daughter, Kathy and her husband John Morrell of Windham; three sons, David LeGage of FL, Michael and his wife Ann LeGage of Scarborough, and Dan and his wife, Trisha LeGage of Gorham; six grandchildren, Cynthia LeGage, Timothy LeGage, Michael LeGage Jr., Brittany Gilman, Lucas LeGage and Logan LeGage; five great grandchildren, Jackson Baizley, Lucas Baizley, Leila LeGage, Boston Lamb, and Winston Lamb. Visiting hours celebrating Mary's life will be held on Thursday, November 4, 2021 from 11:00am to 12:00pm at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland, Maine. A service will follow in the chapel at 12:00pm. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland, Maine.
