Mary F. Bourque

January 28, 1922 ~ July 6, 2016
South Portland- Mary F. Bourque passed away at the age of 94 at her home at Bay Square, an assisted living facility in Yarmouth where she had resided for the last 21 months. She had pancreatic cancer and died just five days after receiving her diagnosis. She was born in Spencer, MA on January 28, 1922, the daughter of the late Francis J. McGrail and Mary E. Culliton McGrail. As a baby of six weeks old she lost her mother and was raised by her father with the help of two beloved aunts. Mary attended elementary school in Spencer and later in Augusta, ME after her father remarried and settled there. She graduated from Cony High School in the class of 1940. Nursing was her calling and she graduated as an RN from the Sisters Hospital School of Nursing in 1944. During her brief career she worked in Gardiner, Waterville and Portland hospitals in various capacities including private duty, general duty and supervisory roles. Shortly before the end of WWII she married her high school sweetheart, Paul Vincent Bourque of Augusta, who was serving in the Air Force at the time. She gave up nursing to become a full time stay at home mother to her only child. Mary lived in South Portland for most of her married life volunteering in the South Portland Public School, Holy Cross Church, Girl Scouts of America and for the American Cancer Society. For over 20 years she enjoyed summer camping on Long Lake in Harrison, ME with her husband and daughter. She was a communicant of Holy Cross Church in South Portland for many years and belonged to the Churchs Womens Sodality. She was an observer more than a participant. One of her favorite things was sitting on a bench in downtown Old Orchard Beach and observing the summer activity there. She enjoyed music and summer band concerts. She was a true home-body finding enjoyment just in her home and her family. She is predeceased by her husband Paul V. Bourque, her parents and her half-brother John McGrail of Augusta. She is survived by her daughter Sister Anne-Marie Bourque, a Sister of Mercy, from Lewiston, ME, cousins and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their thanks to the Bay Square at Yarmouth staff whose compassionate, quality care made a difference in her later life. Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, July 10, 2016 from 2:00 to 4:00pm at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Monday, July 11, 2016 at 10:15am followed by an 11:00am Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Cross Church, 124 Cottage Road, South Portland.
