PORTLAND Mary V. (Houston) Bennett, 91, of Chapman Street, died Thursday, June 23, 2016 at Ledgewood Manor, Windham. Born on December 11, 1924, Mary was the daughter of the late George and Annie (Mulkern) Houston. She was a graduate of Cathedral High School Class of 1942 and attended Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and Margaret Hague Nursing School in New Jersey. She worked for 4 years as a Registered Nurse at Mercy Hospital before marrying George A. Bennett, Jr. Together, they moved to Randolph to raise their family and returned to Portland in 1954. Her husband predeceased her in 1968, and Mary resumed her nursing career at Mercy Hospital and St. Josephs Manor. Above all else, Mary loved her family and enjoyed the time she spent with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother and sisters, and nieces and nephews, especially at her camp on Thomas Pond. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary is predeceased by her son, Michael J. Bennett; sisters, Patricia Houston, Sr. Regina Marie (Barbara Houston) and Margaret Russell; brother, George Houston. She is survived by her son, Peter Bennett and wife Jane of Gorham, her daughter, Andrea Dickson and husband Robert of Harvard, MA. She is also survived by her sister, Elizabeth Ryan of MA; grandchildren, Luke Bennett, TJ Giggey, Marissa Dickson, and Thomas Bennett; great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Rose and Emma Lily Bennett. Mary and her family appreciated the kindness and friendship of her neighbors and aides who made her later years more enjoyable as her eyesight failed. Visiting Hours will be held on Wednesday, June 29 from 5-8PM at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited at the funeral home on Thursday, June 30 at 9:15AM followed by a 10AM Mass of Christian Burial at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street, Portland. Interment to follow at Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland. Following the graveside service, relatives and friends are invited to join the family at Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth for a reception. In lieu of flowers,memorial contributions to the American Red Cross of Southern Maine, 2401 Congress St, Portland, ME 04102.
