Marion D. Pollard

Marion D. Pollard, 92, of Shapleigh, died Thursday, February 28, 2008 at the Newton Center in Sanford.Mrs. Pollard was born in Somerville, MA on April 9, 1915 to Andrew and Iva Hobbs Dowbridge. She attended schools in Reading, MA, Bellows Falls, VT and Sanford, ME. After graduating from high school, she became employed as a telephone operator for AT&T in Sanford. She later gained employment as a switchboard operator for the former Goodall Sanford Mills where she remained for 12 years until the mills closed. She then transferred back to AT&T as an operator until the dial system was integrated and was transferred to Biddeford where she worked in the business office until her retirement after 25 years of service in 1975.As her arthritis progressed and activities diminished, she faithfully did her exercises and continued to be as involved as possible with her many friends and family. After retiring, she and her daughter Pat built a year-round home on Mousam Lake. Marion enjoyed lake living while sitting in her favorite chair overlooking the lake, which was a life long dream. She was able to watch lake activities, wildlife and changing seasons. This was a favorite spot for family and friends enjoying many fun times, especially family reunions. Her laugh was certainly a contagious one and will be missed.One of Marion's favorite pastimes was to follow political races, whether on a local or national level. She loved to read and watch the news channels to keep abreast and loved to discuss those views as they came forth.Marion continued to be active in lodge work and loved to do ceremonial rituals. Her love of Eastern Star and participation with the group was a highlight of her life. She was instrumental in gathering her high school class after 40 years to hold reunions that were enjoyed by she and her classmates. She was a life member of Ruth Chapter #14 of Order of Eastern Star in Springvale serving as Worthy Matron three times. She was a past District Deputy, Grand Representative and served as treasurer for many years. She was a life member of Ruhumah Lodge #33 in Springvale and the Telephone Pioneers of America.Mrs. Pollard was predeceased by her parents; her first husband Harold Baldwin in 1951; her second husband Kerwin Pollard in 1974; a sister, Dorothy Roberts and a niece, Barbara Roberts Goodrich.Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Baldwin of Shapleigh; a niece, Linda Haley of Colorado; a nephew, Alan Goodrich of Springvale and several other nieces and nephews.A period of visitation will be held form 4:00 to 6:00 PM on Sunday, March 2, 2008 at the Carll-Heald and Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street in Springvale. The Order of the Eastern Star will be officiating services during the visitation at 5:00 PM.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be sent to the Shapleigh Rescue Squad, P.O.
