Marie E. Roos

April 10, 1925 ~ October 21, 2016
PORTLAND Marie E. (Caswell) Roos, 91, died Friday, October 21, 2016, with her family by her side. Born in Portland on April 10, 1925, Marie was the daughter of the late Harold S. and Mary C. (Foley) Caswell. She was raised in Gorhams Corner and Peaks Island and attended school at St. Dominics, Cathedral and Morse High School in Bath where she graduated from in 1943. During WWII, Marie worked at the South Portland Shipyard as a welder and payroll clerk. Following the war, she worked for Rines Brothers Department Store, Porteous, Mitchell and Braun Department Store, and the Portland Press Herald. Marie had a loving Irish heart and was very proud of her Irish heritage and quick wit. She was known for being an independent, honest and straightforward person. These qualities are what made her unique and probably contributed to her long life. Marie enjoyed beano, watching Wheel of Fortune, reading, crossword puzzles and making her famous peanut butter fudge for family gatherings. However, she had the most fun when she was gambling. Prior to her declining health, Marie enjoyed taking bus tours with VIP to Foxwoods and Mohegan and loved taking day trips to Oxford Hills and Hollywood Slots in Bangor. She also enjoyed scratch tickets and was known to be a winner! Most important to Marie was her family, which she loved and cherished. She considered her family to be a blessing and encouraged them to also see the many blessings in their life. She was predeceased by her beloved husband , Richard Roos; son, Richard Dickie Roos, Jr.; sisters, Katherine, Martina, Betty Ann, and Caroline; brother, Harry. She is survived by her daughter, Cecelia M. Penny Boles and husband Stephen of Scarborough; son, Paul Roos of Portland; grandchildren, Michelle Knight and husband Arny, Natalie Lytle and husband Gary; great-grandchildren, Ryan, Cecelia, and Avery; sister-in-law, Jackie Permont; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the 7th floor staff at Maine Medical Center and the 2nd floor staff at New England Rehabilitation Center for their continued support and care.
