Marie Elizabeth McGovern

Cape Elizabeth- Marie E. McGovern (Lizzie), 91, of Cape Elizabeth, died February 3, 2018, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. Marie was born on January 2, 1927, in Machiasport, the daughter of Robert and Doris (Watts) Pettegrow, and was one of five children. After graduating from Washington Academy she moved to Portland where she met her future husband William (Bill) McGovern. They were married on March 24, 1951 and were together for 58 years before Bill passed away on April 18, 2009. She worked at Atherton's Furniture and retired from Maine National Bank. After retiring she loved to garden, knit, and host family dinners. Marie was predeceased by her parents; her loving husband, William A. McGovern; her sisters, Greta Hunter, Thelma Cousins; and a brother Dale Pettegrow. She is survived by her sons, James and his wife Melonee of South Portland, and Gary and his wife Patricia of Parrish, FL; a sister, Tina Davis of Machias; grandchildren, Melissa Myrick and her partner Michael Myrick of South Portland, Corey McGovern of Kansas City, B.J. Merchant of Buxton; great grandchildren, Taylor Bacheldor and Liam McGovern; several nieces and nephews. Marie resided at Village Crossing in Cape Elizabeth, now The Landing, for the last two and half years of her life. Mel and I would like to thank the wonderful staff for their loving care of mom. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery in Cape Elizabeth, at a later date, with a private family service. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Homes.
