SOUTH PORTLAND - Marie Louise Letourneau, 93, of South Portland, Thursday August 22, 2013 at South Portland Nursing Home. She was born in Riviere-du-Loup, Quebec Canada a daughter of John Felix Martin and Alice Morel Martin. As a young woman she was gifted with tremendous skills in needlecraft and weaving. She shared this skill by working as a teacher in the art of tapestry and weaving in Canada. Marie married Dennis Letourneau on July 21, 1952 at the St. Lejeune Church in St. Come, Quebec, Canada. The family moved to Portland in 1960 when Dennis accepted a heavy trucks mechanics position in Portland. Marie raised her family in Portland where she became an active volunteer with numerous organizations. In 1971, her husband predeceased her. In 1975 she moved to South Portland. She continued to volunteer and was active with the Foster Grandparents Program. Marie was a longtime communicant of Holy Cross Church. Marie was also predeceased by four sisters, Susan, Alice, Theresa, Presantine and four brothers, John, Vincent, Lucien and Felix. Survivors include two daughters, Suzanne Carr and husband Sean of So. Portland, Cecile Letourneau of Old Orchard Beach; three sons, Martin Letourneau of Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, Gilles Letourneau and wife Michele of South Portland, Paul Letourneau and wife Beth of South Portland; sisters Germain, Jacqueline, and 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. Relatives and friends are invited to attend visitation from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday August 29, 2013 Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, and South Portland. A brief service will follow at 6:00 p.m.Online condolences may be expressed below.

  1. I work with Marie’s daughter, Sue Carr, and because of Sue’s stories feel like I’ve known Marie. She was a wonderful person who lived a remarkable life helping people and raising kids by herself. The world needs more people like her.
