Margaret Mary Naples

PORTLAND - Margaret Mary Naples passed away peacefully with loving family at her side on Saturday, October 13, 2012, at Seal Rock Healthcare, Saco. She was born in Portland on December 5, 1914, to John J. and Jane M. (Doherty) Locke. She attended Portland schools. Family was the central focus of Margaret's life. She was a loving, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and sister. Margaret married the love of her life, Frank, and prior to his passing, they shared 55 wonderful years together raising their five children on Munjoy Hill. A very fashion conscious lady, and for years, while a resident of the Munjoy Hill community, it was common to see Margaret walking daily from Munjoy Hill to "downtown" Congress Street to shop for the latest fashions. In the early forties, her husband Frank was employed at the South Portland Shipyard participating in the building of Liberty Ships, and in November, 1944, Margaret was honored to have christened the Liberty Ship Coasters Harbor which is now commemorated at the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath. Margaret was employed by Porteous, Mitchell and Braun for many years prior to her retirement. She participated in and volunteered with a number of church, civic, and school organizations. After her retirement she volunteered for many years at the Mercy Hospital Gift Shop. Margaret was an enthusiastic fan of all sports. She enjoyed the ocean and in her early years her favorite swimming beaches were East End Beach and Higgins Beach. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed gardening, particularly when she and Frank lived in Falmouth. She loved and enjoyed many gatherings of family and friends and enjoyed hosting family for her Italian delights when she prepared "Papa Frank's" special recipes of spaghetti and meatballs or chicken cacciatore. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank J. Naples, a son Frank J. (Naples) Napolitano, Jr., and a granddaughter Linda Napolitano. Surviving are three daughters, Katherine J. McDonald and her husband Frank of Scarborough, Mary Jane Ashley and her husband Jim of Scarborough, Joanne M. Yates and her husband Peter of Alexandria, VA; a son, Dickie (Naples) Napolitano and his wife Susan of Higgins Beach; daughter-in-law, Barbara Napolitano of Tucson, AZ; 18 grandchildren, Michael Napolitano, Mark Napolitano, Lisa Weems, Erin McDonald, Stephanie Hurley, Mary Ellen Powers, Jacqueline Caron, Michael McDonald, Sean McDonald, James E. Ashley III, Susan Kistner, Gregory Ashley, Christopher Ashley, Jennifer Yates, Caroline Zambrowicz, Richard J. Napolitano, Jr., Stephen Napolitano, Andrea Napolitano-Romer; 29 great grandchildren, a "special" cousin Anne Wooten; and several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held from 4-7pm on Tuesday, October 16, at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. Prayers will be recited at 9:15 am, on Wednesday, October 17, at the funeral home, followed by a 10 am Mass of Christian Burial at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress St., Portland. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland. Margaret's family gratefully acknowledges the kind, considerate, compassionate care provide to "Mother" by the entire staff at "Second Floor Private" and the Beacon Hospice staff during her residency at Seal Rock at Atlantic Heights.
