CUMBERLAND - Llewellyn W. Richards Jr, 80, of Main Street, Cumberland died on Monday, November 11, 2013 at Mercy Hospital with his family by his side. Lew was born in Portland, Maine on November 25, 1932 the son of Llewellyn W. Sr and Helen C. Jennings Richards. He attended local schools. Following high school, Lew, enlisted and served in the United States Air Force. On October 6, 1956 he married Louise T. DeSimon at St. Peter's Church in Portland. Together they lived in California before returning to Maine in 1969. After returning to Maine Lew started his own flooring installation business. He later opened his first retail store, Country Carpets, in Gray Village in 1972. In the mid 1980's he opened two more retail locations, Carpet Warehouse, in Poland Spring and South Portland. He ran the business until his retirement in 1995. Unable to remain idle after retirement, Lew worked several part-time jobs including Paul G. White Flooring and Hannaford. In his spare time, Lew, had one passion, golf. He loved the sport and was a member of several clubs including Val Halla, The Woodlands and Purpoodock Country Club. He enjoyed traveling all over the United States to play golf including several trips to Ireland to play in tournaments. He enjoyed working on projects around the house and tending to his yard, and a volunteer at the St. Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen in Portland. Although, Lew was a man of few words, he was extremely caring, kind and giving. His family was his first priority. While quiet, he had a dry sense of humor that made most smile.
