SOUTH PORTLAND - Lena M. (Noble) McCarthy, 82, of Pleasant Ave., died Sunday, January 13, 2013. She was born in Calais on April 25, 1930, the daughter of Max and Phyllis (Sherman) Noble of Milltown, Maine. Lena grew up in Calais and attended area schools. She graduated from Calais Academy, class of 1947. In 1950, Lena moved to Portland. For 38 years, from 1951 until she retired in 1991, she worked for New England Telephone Co. Lena was a member of the Verizon Pioneers and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. She was a faithful communicant of St. Patrick's Church in Portland. Lena also enjoyed playing Bingo with her friends. In addition to her parents, Lena is predeceased by her loving husband, Frank, Jr., and her son, Frank, III. She is survived by her son, Michael McCarthy and his wife Erika of Leesburg, VA; three grandchildren, Kristina, Ethan, and Xavier McCarthy, all of Leesburg, VA; and sisters-in-law Dorothy Black of Vermont and Mary McCarthy of Portland, Maine; and several nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 pm on Friday, Jan. 18, at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited at 8:15 am, on Saturday at the chapel, followed by a 9am Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Evangelist, Main St., South Portland. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.Online condolences may be expressed below.

  1. Dear Mike and Family, I am so sorry to hear about your mother. I always enjoyed talking with you. Unfortunately we will be unable to attend her visiting hours and funeral as we will be out of town. I would love to catch up sometime via phone or email.   2. Michael, I am so sorry for your loss. I met you at Hawthorne House, as my Mom was also there. I worked with Lena for many years at NET. She was quite a character and a delight to have known. We had many fun times in our jobs in Directory Assistance. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.
