Lawrence L. Peabbles

WESTBROOK - Lawrence L. Peabbles, 79, of Westbrook, entered into heaven surrounded by his family April 3, 2014 at his residence following a long battle with cancer. He was born July 16, 1934 in Portland, Maine and is the son of Frank H. and Arlene Glew Peabbles, Jr. He was married to Betty A. Harrington for sixty years. Larry grew up in Cape Elizabeth and attended Cape Elizabeth High School and was known for being a strong athlete. He enjoyed the lifestyle of the farm which included gardening with his father, riding the work horses and gathering for large family dinners that included his grandfather with whom he was very close. He also loved spending time at Peabbles Cove. He especially loved to go lobstering, or spending the night camping out on the beach. He loved to be a daredevil and go swimming in the middle of the hurricane. Larry owned and operated his own tile and floor covering business. He was a well-respected flooring specialist who worked in the greater Portland area for over 50 years. He took great pride in his work and was called on by others for his excellence and expertise. He was a businessman of integrity and was known for his unique sense of humor. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and had a great love for gardening. His greatest love of all was his family. He loved his family unconditionally and dedicated his life to his family. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He showed great leadership and lived his life as an example. He loved to go to Yogi's campground every year and took pride in setting up a campsite with his grandchildren, whom all just loved being with their Papa. He loved getting the family together for cookouts and bonfires. Many memories were made around the fourth of July at his camp with food and fireworks. He spent countless hours planning a boating trip for the family, and he especially enjoyed taking the grandchildren tubing and waterskiing. Larry was predeceased by a son Lawrence L. Peabbles, Jr. in 2003; a daughter, Eliza Lovejoy in 2011 and a grandson, Elijah Peabbles in 2010. He is survived by his wife Betty Peabbles of Westbrook; two daughters, Yvonne Peabbles of Westbrook, Jewel Peabbles of Falmouth; a son, Craig Johnson of Westbrook; 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, April 8th at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. A 1:30 p.m., Wednesday funeral service will be held at Cape Elizabeth Church of the Nazarene, Route 77, 499 Ocean House Road, and Cape Elizabeth. Burial will be at Seaside Cemetery, Cape Elizabeth. Jewel and Yvonne, I was so sorry to hear about your Dad. I was in Savannah reading the paper on my iPad when I saw it. He was too young to lose. He sounded like quite the wonderful man. I send hugs and love to both of you, Kris Saunders
