Portland - Kevin Colgan, 49, died on Thursday, March 11, 2021 at Maine Medical Center in Portland. Kevin was born on December 12, 1971 in Ridley Park,
Pennsylvania, the son of the late John G. Colgan and Molly Colgan Donovan. He
graduated in the Class of 1990 from Northampton High School, in Northampton, MA. After graduation, Kevin moved out west to pursue music. He played and recorded in Los Angeles, then moved to Portland, Oregon. There he joined the band Molly Cliff, later formed Sharon America, and ultimately Western Family. He wrote and recorded some amazing albums and performed his original songs in venues across the country.
Music was always central to Kevin's existence. He was an exceptionally talented guitar player with a beautiful voice, but it was his capacity to weave poetry with
melody, harmony and innovative chord progressions that defined his songwriting.
Beyond music, Kevin was passionate and accomplished as a cook and a fisherman. He worked as a chef in restaurants on both coasts, not only achieving culinary mastery, but also developing deep, lifelong friendships along the way.
Everywhere he lived, he sought out the best fishing holes, where he was incredibly adept at catching trout.
Although his talents were breathtaking, Kevin will be remembered most for his wonderful smile, his huge and loving heart, and the ease with which he seemed to
make everyone around him feel valued and important.
He was predeceased by his father, John G. Colgan. Kevin is survived by his beloved son Will of Portland, OR; his mother and step father, Molly and Bill Donovan of Scarborough; a sister, Maureen Kirsch and her husband Stephen of Scarborough, his older brother John Colgan of Portland; his younger brother Patrick Colgan and his wife Cara of Portland; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. A celebration of Kevin's life will be held at a later date.
