Kenneth L. Roberts

kenneth roberts
Scarborough - Kenneth "Ken" L. Roberts, 72, died on Monday, August 27, 2018, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House (Gosnell), surrounded by his loving family. He had gone the distance and then some, courageously battling metastatic colon cancer and all its complications for almost 3 years. Ken was born May 4, 1946, the son of the late Loring and Olga (Sicco) Roberts in Boston, MA. Ken grew up in Belmont, MA and graduated from Belmont High School. He received a Bachelor's degree in Accounting from Bentley University. After moving to Maine, Ken worked for 35 years at BerryDunn in Portland, ME as a CPA and Principal. Serving clients in the long-term care industry intrigued him most and he was instrumental in creating a financial data base to help them improve. He was known in the Firm as a wizard in Excel. He met his wife Linda (Eaton) Roberts at BerryDunn and they married in May 1990. Ken retired in 2011. Following retirement he served on the Board of Overseers of the Maine Bar Association and volunteered preparing tax returns for AARP Foundation. Ken was also a mentor to students on FIRST Robotics Team 58 in South Portland. Ken's childhood summers were spent at the family camp on Lake Wentworth in Wolfeboro, NH. As an adult, Ken spent as much time at the Lake as possible with his children, grandchildren and special long-time friends taking in the beautiful view, boating, playing cards, enjoying sips of Crown Royal and just reminiscing. He dedicated time toward protecting the Lake by serving as the Treasurer for the Wentworth Watershed Association (WWA) for many years. Ken enjoyed listening to classic Rock n' Roll and lots of other music. Drums were his instrument and "Moby Dick" could be considered his theme song. He played music loud - in the car, at home and even a little too loud at work. He mastered Boston "driving style" by working as a taxi driver while in college. Ken was fun and brilliant and a marvel with trivia. Family was most important to Ken and he enjoyed attending sporting events, concerts and gatherings. He shared his love of golf, music, watching the Patriots (occasionally, the Giants) and the Red Sox play, watching TV from his recliner, and, especially, traveling with his family. He was privileged to have experienced most of the 50 states, islands in the Caribbean and much of Europe. Not known for his culinary skills, he mastered such delicacies as egg in a nest and tuna melts. Ken was much more passionate, though, about eating delicious food. Along with his parents, Ken was predeceased by his lifelong friend and comrade in health battles, Jim Sullivan. He leaves an inheritance of gentleness, kindness, humor, strength, patience, perseverance, courage and love to his wife, Linda of Scarborough; two daughters from a prior marriage, Wendy Roberts and her husband Jerry Donovan of York, Meghan Malloy and her husband Shawn of Topsfield, MA; a son, Nathaniel (Nate) Roberts of Scarborough; a sister, Carol Blodgett and her husband Lawrence of New Richmond, OH; three grandchildren, Thomas, Killian and Anna; a special nephew, Clif Edwards of Sacramento, CA; a stepson, Tom Bill, and his daughter Dahlia of Portland; loving companion dogs, Kona and Alpie, and many other beloved relatives and friends. Ken was (and family remain) deeply grateful to those that helped care for him in the past 9 months when he was in most fragile health, including his son, Linda's mother and family, his daughters and many incredibly compassionate nurses and doctors at Maine Medical Center, Maine Center for Cancer Medicine and area health rehab centers. His family is profoundly thankful to the staff at Gosnell for the tender care Ken received at the end of his life. Visiting hours celebrating Ken's life will be held from 5-8PM on Friday, August 31, at the Conroy-Tully Walker South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A memorial service will be held at 11AM on Saturday, September 1, at the First Lutheran Church, 132 Auburn Street, Portland.
