Kenneth R. Mitchell

Alfred-Kenneth R. Mitchell Jr., 82, of Alfred passed away peacefully Friday March 19, 2010 following an extended residence at the Greenwood Center in Sanford. Ken, the man behind the shield, was born on April 28, 1927 in Portland, Maine to Kenneth R. and Helena (Hutchins) Mitchell. A graduate of Deering High School, and Bowdion College, Ken served in the US Navy during WWII. Kenneth later served his community as a detective with the New York City Police Department retiring in 1974. Ken was an avid patron and dedicated employee for the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees.Following retirement Kenneth continued to serve as a Security Officer for Ringling Brothers Circus in Florida, as well as, several local hotels here in Kennebunkport. Kenneth and his wife Carol enjoyed volunteering with in their community. A dedicated Yankee fan, Ken enjoyed watching baseball, listening to big band music, photography, golfing, and stamp collecting. As a 32nd degree Mason he belonged to Fraternal Lodge #55 AF & AM, in Alfred. Kenneth was active in White Rose Chapter #54, Maine Council #7, St Amand Commandery #20, Scottish Rite Valley of Portland, Pioneer Club, and Kora Shrine. In 1994, Kenneth was honored as the 19th district's "Mason of the Year." He was a member of Ruth Chapter #14 Order of the Eastern Star. Kenneth enjoyed participating in his fraternal orders and socializing surrounded by both friends, and family. Ken will be remembered as a kind and loving man and will be dearly missed by his friends and family.Ken was predeceased by his wife Carolyn D. Knight Mitchell.Surviving are his wife, Carol Walker Roux Mitchell of Alfred, four stepchildren, Laurie Roux Works of Sanford, SSGT Scott Roux, USMC of North Carolina, Carl Knight of Alfred and Linda Lavoie of Sanford and 12 grandchildren.Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Tuesday, March 23rd at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street in Springvale.
