Kathleen E. "Kathy" Stefanilo, 55, of Sanford, died at home on May 12 after a courageous battle with cancer.She was born in Lowell, MA on November 19, 1957, the daughter of Daniel J. and Lorraine (Campbell) Valley, Sr. Kathy was a 1975 graduate of Malden High School and a 1978 graduate of the Malden Hospital School of Nursing.Kathy married Michael Stefanilo on April 28, 1978 and they moved to Maine in 1986.Kathy worked for many years as a registered nurse in the emergency department at York Hospital, retiring last year due to illness. She was the 2012 state of Maine recipient of the Annual Karen O'Neil Professional Award for excellence and endurance in advancement and education of emergency nursing.She was a devout member of St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, attending daily mass. She also taught CCD for several years and was active at St. Thomas School.As her family was first and foremost, she involved herself in many of their activities. She volunteered many hours at the Sanford Springvale Soccer Association and was past president of the York Youth Hockey Association. She could be counted on to assist with fundraisers and many other functions in support of youth athletics and her children's other endeavors. Kathy also enjoyed flower gardening.Survivors include her husband, Michael Stefanilo, Sr. of Sanford, daughter Nicole Twomey, her husband Matt and their children Colin and Owen of Amesbury, MA, sons Michael Stefanilo, Jr. and his partner Anthony Crosby of Boston, MA, Daniel Stefanilo and his wife Brittany of Biddeford, Patrick Stefanilo and his companion Kim Pon of Sanford, Andrew Stefanilo and his companion Laura of Orono, siblings Marie Kelley and her husband Joe of Stewartstown, NH, Daniel Valley and his wife Dale of Malden, MA, Patricia Valley of Florida, James Valley and his wife Joan of Lynn, MA, Theresa Ferullo and her husband Tony of Bow, NH, Tim Valley and his wife Diane of Lowell, MA, Tom Valley and his wife Mary Ann of Boston, MA, Anthony Valley of Bedford, MA, Vincent Valley of Bow, NH, Eva Marvell and her husband Dennis of Derry, NH, Karen Gould of Bedford, MA, Ellen Gautreau and her husband James of Derry, NH, her father and mother in law, Red and Barbara Stefanilo of Malden, MA, sisters in law Joanne Curtis and her husband Phil of Scarborough, Jeanne Jordan and her husband Stephen of Saugus, MA and many nieces, nephews, co-workers and friends. She was predeceased by a brother in law, Dan Stefanilo.Relatives and friends are invited to call on Thursday from 4 to 7 PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 12:00 noon at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish at Holy Family Church, 66 North Avenue, Sanford. Burial will follow in St. Ignatius Cemetery in Sanford.Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.
