SANFORD Joseph N. Smith, Sr. 85 died Monday at the Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, NH following a long illness. He was born in Andover, MA Sept. 21, 1921 a son of Frederick & Margaret (Nichols) Smith. He was educated in Andover, MA schools and later moved to So. Hiram at the age of 17 and completed his education and graduated high school from there.Mr. Smith worked as a weaver at the former Gonic (NH) textile mill and Sanford mills until its closing. He later was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.He was an Army veteran of WW II. He was a communicant of St. Therse of Lesieux, Parish St. Ignatius Church, a three year past commander of the V.F.W. and was also a member of the Amvets Post #3 and a Mason of the Preble Lodge and a Shriner. He enjoyed playing pool.Mr. Smith was predeceased by a son Robert who died in 1991 and a stepdaughter, Helen Lapierre who died in 1993. Survivors are his wife of nearly 58 years, Lucille (Angers) Smith of Sanford, two sons, Joseph Jr. and his wife Shirley of Ocala, FL and Dennis and his wife Ruth of No. Berwick, two daughters, Kathy Brooks and her husband Robert of Sanford and Julie Brochu and her husband Douglas of Great East Lake, NH and a sister, Anna Rounds of Maryland. Nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren.A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM Tuesday at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, St. Ignatius Church . Burial will be at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta on Wednesday at 1:00 PMArrangements by the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter St., Sanford.To leave the family a message of condolence please use the "condolences" tab to the left.
