SOUTH PORTLAND - Joseph Anthony DiPierro, 89, of South Portland, died Monday June 4, 2012, at The Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough. He was born September 12, 1922 in Saco a son of Joseph and Angelina Zaccagnino DiPierro. Joseph was a graduate of Thornton Academy. Following high school, Joseph served in the Army during World War II, and was the recipient of three bronze stars. His plane was shot down in the European Theater of Operations and his brother Matthew was a member of the rescue team. Following the war, Joseph returned to Maine and married the former Norma Charles on July 4, 1958. He owned and operated Central Market on Congress St. in Portland with his brother Guy. He was a longtime communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church. He was known as a collector of discarded treasures, enjoyed the horse races at Scarborough Downs, and playing cards with family and friends. He is survived by his wife Norma of 53 years of South Portland; a daughter Donna Cote and her husband James of South Portland; a son Joseph DiPierro and his wife Natasha of Newport Coast, California; a sister Rosalind Urso of Bradford, Massachusetts, and two grandchildren, Cassandra Diffin and Zachary Cote of South Portland. Visitation will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited 8:45a.m. Saturday at the South Portland Chapel followed by a 9:30a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Evangelist Church, Main St., South Portland. Burial will follow at Brooklawn Memorial Park, Portland.Online condolences may be expressed below.

  1. I am the daughter of the late Anthony Cardone ist cousin of your loved one .. I have been searching for you all for years and did possibly attend your wedding I am so sorry to have found Joseph too late , my Fathers many stories of their shared youth and family brought him his greatest pleasure in his last days and through the years. I did meet my great Aunt Angelina many times , and belonging to your extended family brought me comfort and security .. You are all in my prayers … cathyantique@yahoo.com
