Joseph L. Bieber

CAPE ELIZABETH - Joseph L. Bieber, 89, formerly of Cape Elizabeth, recently of Portland, died April 7, 2014 at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough. Joseph was born in Harriman, New York on May 17, 1924 a son of George and Matilda Bieber. He attended local schools and was a 1942 graduate of Central Valley High School. Following high school, Joseph joined the Army and served during World War II, in the European and African Theaters of Operations. He was wounded and earned a Purple Heart. During his medical recovery in New York, Joseph met his future wife Lorraine E. McCarthy. They married on October 4, 1947. Following the War Joseph began his working career as a machinist in New York. He later accepted a position with Addressograph- Multigraph Company. As his responsibility with the company grew, Joseph and his family moved to New Jersey and later to Maine. He and his family lived for many years in Cape Elizabeth where he was an active member of the community and a faithful communicant of St. Bartholomew Church. Joseph served as a Eucharistic Minister and alter server for many years at the church. During the last few years, Joseph and his wife moved to their son Christopher's apartment building in Portland. He was predeceased by two sons, Lawrence Bieber in 1969 and Paul Bieber in 2010 and three brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his beloved wife Lorraine Bieber of Portland; two sons, Daniel Bieber of Bellingham, WA, Christopher E. Bieber and his fianc(c) Sheila Weiss of Portland; a granddaughter Carrie Bieber of Bellingham, WA. Visitation will be held 2 to 4 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday April 22, at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Wednesday, a 12:00 noon Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Bartholomew Church, 8 Two Lights Road, Cape Elizabeth. Burial with Military Honors will be held 9:00 a.m. Thursday at Maine Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.
