Jose A. Lopes

SOUTH PORTLAND Mr. Jose A. Lopes, Sr., 86, lost his battle of multiple health issues in the early morning of Tuesday, October 6, 2015. Born in Providence, RI, Jose was the son of the late John and Mary Lopes. He honorably served in the United States Coast Guard for over 21 years. Following his honorable discharge, Jose worked for several years as a security officer with Mecca. An avid sports fan, Jose enjoyed watching all sports, especially the Patriots and the Red Sox. Other than his family, Joses greatest love in life was animals. He often gave time, energy and monetary donations to animal shelters and charities. In addition, he welcomed into his family animals that showed up on his doorstep. He is survived by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Clarace Mae (Manzer) Lopes; children, John Lopes, Sr., Michael Lopes, Sr., Eva Lopes, Sandra Merritt and husband Gilbert, Cheryl Giordano and husband Joseph, Jose A. Lopes, Jr., and wife Cheryl, Tammy Lopes, Henry Lopes, Linda Lance and husband Kevin, Scott Lopes, Billie Jo Chiamulera and husband Robert. Also survived by over 30 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and his two dogs, Lucy and Benie. Visiting Hours will be held on Thursday from 4-6PM at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A procession will form at the Funeral Home on Friday at 1:30PM followed by a 2PM Graveside Service with Military Honors at Brooklawn Memorial Park, Congress Street, Portland.
