John (Jack) Stanton Tewhey

SOUTH PORTLAND - John (Jack) Stanton Tewhey, 93, formerly of South Portland, died Thursday April 17, 2014 at Avita of Stroudwater in Westbrook. Jack was born in Lewiston on Sept 25, 1920, a son of William F. and Clara Legendre Tewhey. He attended local schools and was a graduate of Lewiston High School, where he was a star athlete, playing on the football, basketball, track and baseball teams. Jack attended Hebron Academy and later accepted a football scholarship at the University of Idaho. John left college to serve with the Marine Corps during World War II. He served in the South Pacific in the Solomon Islands. When the war was over, Jack returned to Lewiston where he married the former Rita M. Boucher on October 12, 1946. He worked briefly as a landscaper in the area before accepting a position with the Milliken-Tomlinson Company as a produce buyer. The family moved to South Portland in 1959, where Jack was an active member of the community. He was a communicant of Holy Cross Church, the Knights of Columbus and the South Portland VFW. Throughout his life he remained a healthy athletic man who enjoyed hiking and mountain climbing. Jack climbed almost all of the mountains over 4000 feet in New England. After retirement, as an avid golfer he quipped When did we ever find time to work? At age 72 he hit a hole-in-one at The Willowdale Golf Course. He was known to have a droll sense of humor. Jack was predeceased by two brothers, William and Richard Tewhey. Survivors include his beloved wife, Rita Tewhey of Westbrook; a son, Michael J. Tewhey and his wife Gail of Westbrook, and a daughter, Jane Ellen Tewhey of Durham. Services will be private, with burial at Brooklawn Memorial Park of Portland.
