John W. Hunt Jr., 64, of Springvale, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, January 12th in Sanford.John was born in Sanford on October 14, 1944 and lived virtually all of his life in the Sanford/Springvale area. John is predeceased by his mother, Elizabeth MacKay Johnson, his stepfather Russell G. Johnson and his father Dr. John W. Hunt Sr.John attended local schools graduating from Sanford High School in 1964. As a young man John was active in Boy Scout Troop 319, the Springvale Chapter of DeMolay and enjoyed playing intramural and DeMolay basketball. He also enjoyed whatever time he could get at the YMCA and especially those weekend dances. John got to see a great deal of the USA in his step-father's Chevrolet as Dad and Mom took John, his sister and brother on numerous camping trips that included not only the great fishing spots in Maine, but places such as Yellowstone, Crater Lake, and many Civil War battlefields. The family also enjoyed a five-week camping excursion to Alaska via the Alcan Highway.John attended Husson College from 1964-1968 receiving a Bachelors degree in business administration. Shortly after graduating John served in the Air Force. His service included two tours of duty in Korea, brief trips into Vietnam with his final assignment at Loring Air Force Base. After completing active duty John joined the 157th Air Refueling Wing of the New Hampshire Air National Guard serving for over 26 years and obtaining the rank of Technical Sergeant. As part of his active and guard experience, John took advantage of many continuing educational opportunities.John returned from active duty with his bride Kyun-Ye Kim and lived in two family homes - one the Johnson residence on the corner of Winter and Main Streets in Sanford and the other the MacKay residence in Springvale. John worked briefly for Aerofab before embarking on an extended career at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. John and his wife Kim helped raise two of Kim's nephews and a niece. Always striving to learn more, John continued to take advantage of educational opportunities that ranged from joining his mother in taking computer courses to hazardous waste classes at the shipyard to becoming certified as a Pharmacy Technician in 1992. He was active in the Springvale Masonic Lodge serving in a number of capacities including Master and Dad Advisor to the local chapter of DeMolay. With the help of Dr. John McGuckin, John spent over a decade watching out for his mother until his own health made this difficult. John was also an animal lover and in recent years doted over his pet dachshund Haley.Raised in the North Parish Congregational Church in Sanford, John's most recent affiliation has been with the Rainbow United Methodist Church in Portland. The family wishes to thank John and Kim's many friends and the Rainbow United Methodist Church for their support during this difficult time.Besides his loving wife of 35 years, John is survived by his sister Nancy and her husband Richard Herron of Coventry RI, a brother Lloyd Hunt and his wife Sue of Saco, a sister-in-law Yup Ye Kim, nephews Song Youl Lee and Song Sue Lee and niece Chong Nim Lee all of California, as well as nieces Shelley Taylor and Mary Herron and nephews Christopher Herron, Zachary Hunt and Scott Libby.A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday at 12:00 noon at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.Condolences may be expressed at the Concolences tab at left.
