John A. Harmon
John A. Harmon, 65, of North Berwick, died on Monday, November 12, 2007 at Varney Crossing Nursing Center in North Berwick following a long illness.John was born in Alabama on February 3, 1942 to Karl and Millicent Ackroyd Harmon. During his youth, he was a resident of the Pineland Center in Pownal, ME. After leaving Pineland Center, he moved to Gray and then later to Westbrook. He faithfully attended the Grace Baptist Church in Portland and later the Sanford First Baptist Church when he moved to Sanford. While he lived in Sanford, he worked for the Waban Projects workshop. He also assisted from time to time at Bool's Flower Shop, which was owned and operated by his mother and stepfather when he would visit Ithaca, New York.Mr. Harmon was a big fan of country and gospel music. While he was living in Westbrook, he took an interest in making latch hook rugs. He got a lot of enjoyment out of making these rugs and was very meticulous in making sure that they were perfect. Family gatherings were always a special occasion. He especially enjoyed the summertime reunions that his mother would host at a cottage on Moody Beach. John will be remembered as a friendly and loving person and will be fondly remembered by his family and friends. John was predeceased by his father, Karl Harmon and his mother and stepfather, Millicent and Royden "Dick" Lounsbery.Surviving are two brothers, Rufus Harmon and Tom Harmon; two sisters, Helen Harmon and Lois Mickie; an uncle, G. Wallace Ackroyd and his wife Jeannine of Naples Florida; two aunts, Elizabeth Simonds of Sanford and Ruth Beals of Springvale and several cousins. The family would like to thank Dr. Barbara McCall and the staff at Varney Crossing for the quality of Care that John received while he was a resident there.A funeral service will be held at 10:00 on Saturday, November 17th at Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street in Springvale.
