  5. Like many others who frequented the Forest Ave Plaza I got to know John because of that Friendly Dog (as I first called her) Chloe, his constant loving companion. Seeing them outside the Washtub at the Plaza I finally asked his name, and hers, and so a good friendship of many years began. Since I was there almost daily to get my newspaper at CVS I began to visit with him and of course bring treats for Chloe (who being a very perceptive dog gave one of her signature woo-woo-woo barks upon seeing me and thus gave John notice that a friend had arrived). Many years passed in this way, with laughter, discussion, gifts (I treasure a little owl pin he gave me and a sea glass one that he had his friend Victor buy for me at the flea market)and wonderful holiday cards expressing friendship and caring. I soon became a regular visitor to his apt via the back door, bearing dog treats and receiving in return articles he’d saved for me on animals from the Boston Herald. One thing I asked his sister for after he passed was the green stained glass cross hanging there that I’d see when I knocked on the door and heard Chloe announce my presence to him. t is hanging in my dining room window and every day when I see it I remember a good friend and miss him. I know you rest in peace now and as your mother said at your funeral, now John can see! Your memory is kept close to my heart. Love, Heidi
