SOUTH PORTLAND - John C. Frank, Jr., 89, of South Portland, died Monday January 21, 2013 at a Portland hospital. He was born in Portland on January 18, 1924 a son of John C. and Melvina E. Vail Frank. He attended Portland schools and Portland High School. In 1942, John enlisted in the Marine Corps. He served in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. He was the recipient of a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. Following the war he enlisted with the Marine Corps Reserves until 1950. John was employed for over 35 years with the Maine Central Rail Road, retiring in 1984. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post No. 832 of South Portland. He enjoyed woodworking as a hobby and liked to build furniture. In 1948 he married the former Aldea Hannah Shepard; she predeceased him in 1978. On April 24, 1982 he married the former Mary Bridget Dunphy Rudell. John was predeceased by his parents; two sisters, Ruth Frank, Barbara Noyes and a brother Richard Frank. Survivors include his wife Mary B. Frank of South Portland;a son, Stephen Frank and his wife Elizabeth of South Portland; a daughter, Pamela Borick and her husband William of Nevada; three step-daughters, Irene Perreault and her husband Roland of Virginia, Leslie King and her husband Thomas of South Portland, Janet Ferguson and her husband Daniel of Cumberland; several grandchildren and several great grandchildren. Visitation will be held Saturday January 26, 2013 from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., followed by a 4:00 p.m. Service with military rites at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland.
