Joan M. Huntress, 73, of Shapleigh, died on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at the Greenwood Center in Sanford.Joan was born in Saco on August 28, 1941 to Alphy and Palphy (Johnson) Martel. She grew up in Shapleigh where she attended local schools, graduating from Sanford High School in 1959. Following high school she married Charles Huntress and together they raised three sons and shared 55 years of marriage. During her working life she was employed at Sprague Electric.Joan was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed spending time at home with her family. She liked to make afghans and quilts, knitting and crocheting, making crafts and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox. She also loved taking sight-seeing trips with her husband into the White Mountains. Joan had been very active in the First Baptist Church of Shapleigh where she was one of the senior members. She will be remembered as a kind and loving woman and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.Surviving are her husband Charles Huntress, of Shapleigh; three sons, Richard Huntress and his wife Wendy of Waterboro, Bruce Huntress and his wife Nancy of Yelm, Washington and Steven Huntress and his wife Denise of Limerick; eight grandchildren, Kara Huntress, Ariel Huntress, Jenny Cochrane, Steve Cross, Nathan Huntress, Charlie Huntress, Gabrielle Huntress and Alex Huntress; a brother, Arnold Martel of Shapleigh and many nieces, nephews and cousins.Visitation will be held from 10:00 to 11:00 AM with a funeral service following at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 10th at the First Baptist Church of Shapleigh located at 600 Shapleigh Corner Road in Shapleigh. Interment will follow at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to gather back at the church following the burial for a memorial luncheon.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider sending a memorial contribution to the Shapleigh Corner Baptist Church, 600 Shapleigh Corner Road, Shapleigh, Maine 04076.Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.To leave a message of condolence for the family please click on the condolences tab to the left.
