Westbrook- Joan Ekowicki Dodie Costello, 84, died Monday, October 10, 2016 at Avita of Stroudwater after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimers Disease. Joan was born in Portland, Maine, on October 9, 1932, the daughter of the late Peter and Helen (Nalbach) Ekowicki. She graduated from Cathedral High School in the class of 1950 and from Northeast Business School in the class of 1952. She worked for the New England Telephone Company, retiring as assistant manager in the business office after thirty two years of service. In 1983 Joan married Martin (Bud) Costello; together they moved to Green Valley, Arizona, where they remained until Buds death, at which she returned to Maine to be near her family. During their married life, Dodie and Bud traveled extensively to Europe, Australia, and New Zealand, along with three cruises on the Queen Elizabeth II. She was an avid golfer and tennis player; she was a prolific artist, working mainly in oils, ceramics and stained glass. In her spare time, Joan volunteered at the Maine Medical Center Flower Box for several years. Joan was also a lifelong communicant of the Catholic Church. Joan was predeceased by her husband Martin Costello in 1999; a brother in law Anthony Caprio in 2006; her father Peter Ekowicki in 1955 and mother Helen Ekowicki in 2001. She is survived by a brother Robert and his wife Jean Ekowicki of Gorham; two sisters Mary Ekowicki of Portland and Helena Caprio of Wallingford, CT. Dodie greatly loved and delighted in her four nieces and nephews: Susan and husband Nicholas DeCarlo of Fairfield, CT, Michael and wife Terry Caprio of Greer, SC, Ann Cushing of Gorham and Peter and wife Connie Ekowicki of North Yarmouth, ME; Dodie was also Great Aunt to ten great nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff and caregivers at Avita of Stroudwater where Dodie was treated with the utmost respect, care, and love by every member of the staff for the past twenty months. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, October 14, 2016 at 10:30am at the Church of St. Anne, 299 Main Street, Gorham, Maine. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland, ME. I worked with Joan at the telephone company for many years. I have very fond memories of her work ethic, but more than that, I have fond memories of the fun that we shared and the laughs that we had.
