Jeanne d'Arc Therrien, 84, of Sanford, died peacefully on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at the Newton Center in Sanford with her loving family by her side.Jeanne d'Arc was born in Sanford on May 22, 1932 to Ernest and Sadie Normand and was a 1950 graduate of Sanford High School. While raising her only son, she worked for New England Tel & Tel as a switchboard operator in the days before dial tone. She also worked as a bookkeeper, an office manager, a saleswoman for Seamloc Carpet and later on as the office and sales manager for Hersom Lumber Company. Jeanne d'Arc was also a treasurer for NARFE, National and Retired Federal Employees for many years and was a communicant of St. Therse of Lisieux Parish.Jeanne d'Arc was a very beautiful, warm and loving woman and was always stylishly dressed. She kept an immaculate home and was an exceptional cook. She had many interests and talents; she entertained often and also helped many neighbors and friends over the years. She loved music and played the violin that her father made for her when she was young. In her later years she was also an oil painting artist. Jeanne d'Arc was an avid reader and enjoyed crocheting afghans, knitting and gardening. Her beautiful flowerbeds attracted many a passerby who would stop on the roadside to admire the many flowers and beautiful colors.Jeanne d'Arc loved to travel within the United States as well as Canada, Mexico and Europe. With her love of music came ballroom dancing on most Saturday nights at the Rockingham Ballroom in New Hampshire. She and her husband Raymond became so popular there that the band would play their signature music theme when they entered the facility. Through both good times and bad times Jeanne d'Arc remained a pillar of strength and inspiration to everyone. She made a real difference in the lives of others. She will be dearly missed.Jeanne d'Arc was predeceased by her parents and by her husbands, Dale V. Ashby, Clement Perreault, Raymond Gagnon and Maurice Therrien who gave her his undying love and affection until his death in 2013.Surviving are her son, Dale N. Ashby of Portland; her brother, E.J. Roland Normand and his wife Mary-Ellen; her nieces, Sara-Jane Normand, Erin Therrien and her husband Jeff and their four children and her nephew Jonathan Normand and his wife Jennifer.Visitation will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 AM on Friday, April 21st at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home located at 29 Winter Street in Sanford. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 AM at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church, located on North Avenue in Sanford. Interment will be at St. Ignatius Cemetery.The family would like to express their gratitude to Southern Maine Health Care, Newton Center and Hospice of Southern Maine for the care and compassion shown during Jeanne d'Arc's period of declining health.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider sending a memorial contribution in Jeanne d'Arc's memory to their favorite charity.Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.To leave a message of condolence for the family please click on the condolences tab to the left.
