Jean L. Pike, 65, of Shapleigh, passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Sunday, June 29, 2008, following a two year courageous battle with cancer. Jean was born in Malden, MA, on December 10, 1942, a daughter of Edwin and Winifred (Doe) Smith. She graduated from Watertown High School in 1960. She then attended Boston University and graduated from the University of Maine Portland-Gorham where she received a B.S. in Education. Jean was a dedicated primary teacher in the multi-level program at Edison School in Sanford for 30 years. Her teaching ethics went beyond the typical school day. She was often seen taking students who needed encouragement and a little extra TLC bowling or for an ice cream when they had successfully completed a difficult task. The children in her care knew that giving up was not an option. Whether she was teaching, mentoring, in the role of acting principal, serving on educational committees, or facilitating workshops, Jean put in whatever hours were needed until she could say, "D for done". Even after retirement, Jean substituted and volunteered at the Shapleigh Elementary School near her home. She left an impression on all students who were lucky enough to be under her supervision.Jean was also passionate and dedicated to local civic matters and issues. She spent numerous hours volunteering on the Shapleigh Comprehensive Plan. She also volunteered on the Square Pond Association and was a member of the Board of the Directors for the Rescue Squad in Shapleigh. She took pride and pleasure tending to her flower gardens.Jean is predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Robert M. Pike of Shapleigh; a sister, Ruth F.
