Portland - Janet Y. Burns, 80, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at Mercy Hospital.
Janet was born on October 6, 1937 in Watertown, MA, daughter of the late William E. Young and Janet L. (McElaney) Young. Raised in Andover, MA, Janet was a graduate of Andover High School and Katherine Gibbs School of Boston. Throughout her career, she was employed with the Andover Companies, and later, the Sylvania Electric Company in Gorham.
She married David Burns and moved to Portland where they shared many years of marriage until he predeceased her in 2001.
Anyone who knew Janet knew she loved to stay active, read, spend time with friends, and support her parish and community. She could always be found with a book in her hands, playing Mah-Jongg with her friends, or simply spending time with those whom she loved. Janet was a wonderful tennis player, often bringing home trophies from her singles or doubles matches. She was an active communicant of the former Saint Patrick's Church, and was very passionate about Mercy Hospital where she volunteered countless hours.
In addition to her husband and parents, Janet is predeceased by her sister, Judith A.(Young) Corrado and her husband, Richard Corrado; brother, Robert W. Young.
Janet is survived by her sister-in-law, Alice C. (Komlodi) Young of Palm Dessert , CA; nieces, Kimberly Carroll and her husband Patrick, Andrea Young and her life partner Lisa; nephews, Paul Corrado and his wife Sheila, Brian Young and his wife Gia, Steven Corrado and his wife Danielle, and Craig Young and his wife Shelby. Janet is also survived by great-nieces Shawna, Shannon, Siobhan Carroll, Brianne and Kaycie Young, Hailey and Madison Corrado and Avary Young; great-nephews, Jevin and Logan Corrado and Jackson and Griffin Young.
Visiting Hours celebrating Janet's life will be held on Thursday, September 27, 2018 from 8AM-9:30AM at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10AM at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, 307 Congress Street, Portland.
