James W. Strickland
No. Berwick James W. Strickland 86 a resident of Varney Crossing died Saturday Oct. 6 following a long illness. He was born in Wells, October 2, 1921 one of eleven children to William E. & Lula (Nash) Strickland. James was educated in the Wells school system. He enlisted in the Army in 1940. He was awarded the purple heart for wounds he received as a result of hostile actions. He was also captured Jan 20, 1943 by the German army for twenty eight months and was later released on May 5, 1945.James was honorably discharged Sept. 6, 1945 with the rank of Tec 5.He was employed at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery for several years. He later worked as a security guard for somes years and retired at the age of 65.Survivors are two sons, Robert Strickland of Fresno, CA, and James Strickland and his wife Diane of No. Berwick.Three Grandchildren, William & Benjamin Strickland both of Fresno, Ca and Kaitlin Strickland attending the Univ. of Minn. Three Great Grandchildren, Robert Whittington of Sitka, Alaska, Aaron James Strickland of Pioneer, CA and Nathaniel Rice of Fresno, CA.A memorial service will be conducted at Noon Thursday , October 11 at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter St., Sanford, with Reverend Martha Hoberson of the North Parish Congregational Church officiating.
