PORTLAND - James Donovan "Binky" Tetrault, a well-known and beloved member of the Portland community, passed away on May 31, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, love, and unwavering support for his family and friends.
Born on April 15, 1955, in Portland, Maine, to the late Albert and Carla (Donovan) Tetrault, Jim's life was a testament to the power of generosity and genuine human connection.
Also known as “Tate” by his friends, Jim grew up on Munjoy Hill, attended Cathedral Grammar School and graduated from Cheverus High School – class of 1973. He formed lifelong friendships with his friends on the Hill and his classmates at Cathedral and Cheverus. Loyalty and camaraderie were hallmarks of his character, as evidenced by his lifelong ties with the boys.
On June 12, 1976, Jim married the love of his life, Mac, and together they built a beautiful family in Portland. Binky and Mac's love story began at Boston College, where they first met, and their bond only grew stronger over the years. Family was the center of Binky's world, and his grandchildren were his pride and joy.
Jim and Mac shared many wonderful memories, including annual trips to the Jersey Shore where Mac was born and raised. These trips were a cherished tradition, filled with joy and laughter, especially for their grandchildren. Jim also delighted in taking Megan and Jimmy to Notre Dame football games, creating lifelong memories and passing on his love for the sport.
A devoted family man, Jim was the rock of the Tetrault family. He was a loyal brother to Joe and the late John Tetrault, a loving husband to Mac, a caring dad to Jimmy and Megan, and an adoring grandparent to Patrick, Emily, and Geno. Binky's love and loyalty to his family were evident in every aspect of his life.
Known for his kind and gentle nature, Binky rarely raised his voice. A consummate gentleman, he always sought to make people happy and find good in everyone. His huge heart and genuine belief in people built lasting friendships and connections, whether tending bar, working at National Distributors, or simply running into friends around town.
Binky loved local spots like Bruno’s and Forest Gardens and treasured the annual Fourth of July family gatherings on Sebago Lake. These events were a highlight for the Tetrault family, bringing everyone together in celebration and love.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, his beloved wife, Mac; his son, Jimmy; and his brother, John. He is survived by his devoted daughter, Megan Tetrault and her partner Johnny Coyne of South Portland; his brother Joseph Tetrault and his wife, Gale of Portland; his daughter-in-law, Michelle Tetrault and his beloved grandchildren, Patrick, Emily, and Geno, along with several cousins whom he shared a special bond.
James Donovan "Binky" Tetrault's life was a shining example of devotion to family, kindness, and community. He touched the hearts of all who knew him and will be deeply missed. His memory and especially his welcoming trademark smile will live in the hearts of his family and many friends who will forever cherish the special moments they shared with this gentle son of Munjoy Hill.
Visting Hours celebrating Binky’s life will be held on Friday, June 7 from 4-7PM at the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland. I am truly sorry for the loss of this great man. No words could ever describe him.
Fun, faithful to friendships.
Reidy’s
I first met Jimmy in the mid-nineties when I wondered into Parker Reidy’s on a quiet Sunday night where he was tending bar. Over the next thirty years, whether at Reidy’s, The Breakaway, The Pizza Villa, The Bunker, Howie’s Pub, Bruno’s, Jimmy and Mac’s Christmas Eve parties, Megan’s basketball games, or many other places or functions, I could count on his warm genuine smile and high pitched laugh. Jimmy had a way of making one feel special. He didn’t need to be the center of attention; he was happy simply to be in attendance. I am proud and very lucky to have been one of his many friends and I will miss him dearly. He truly was one of the “good guys”. Jimmy was a proud Cheverian who had a passion for football, umpiring softball, bartending, and Bud Light; but by far the biggest piece of his huge heart was reserved for the boundless love he had for his family. Dawn and I want to extend our deepest, heartfelt sympathies to Megan, Joe and Gale, Patrick, Emily, Geno, and Michelle. Jimmy’s love will live on in your hearts and his presence will be with you.
