Jackie M. Butler Sr., 71, of Sanford, passed away on June 6, 2007 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Kennebunk on April 4, 1936, a son of Joseph and Myrtle Butler. Jackie attended Limerick Schools.He was a Sanford police officer from 1963 to 1971 and then a Wells police officer from 1973 until 1993. During his police service he received many commendations and recognitions.In his earlier years he worked for Stevens Tree Company. Jackie was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in Sanford and served as Tiler for five years. Jackie was a member of the Ocean Lodge #142 A.F. & A.M. in Wells, Bauneg Beg Grange #382, Madonna Chapter #144, Order of Eastern Star, past president of Kimball Senior Center in Biddeford. He volunteered his time at the Sanford Unitarian Soup Kitchen.He looked forward to playing cards with family and friends daily. He loved to camp, fish and hunt. He has touched the lives of many people over the years and will be dearly missed by all.He is predeceased by his parents, his son, Dennis L. Butler, three sisters, Dorothea Bergeron, Romona Lockard and Noreen Parent, one brother, Joseph Butler.He will be sadly missed by his wife of 48 years, Emily Butler of Sanford, two sons, Jackie M. Butler Jr., of Winlock, Washington and Mark Butler of Sanford, two daughters, Pamela Connors and her husband, David of Wells and Sherri Bradstreet and her husband Jeffrey of Dixmont, four grandchildren, Joshua Butler of Oregon, Jessica Butler of Springvale, Courtney and Austin Bradstreet of Dixmont, two sisters, Maude Harriman of Saco, Joyce Tracy of Saco, one brother, Lindy Butler of Sanford, as well as several nieces and nephews.A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 9th at 11am at the Sanford First Baptist Church, 905 Main Street in Sanford. A gathering will be held immediately following the service at the Sanford Elks Lodge on Elm Street in Sanford.In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Jackie's memory to a charity of one's choice.To leave a message of condolence for the family please use the condolences tab to the left.
