Hermance R. Guay
Hermance R. Guay, 96, of Sanford, died on Saturday, August 31, 2013 at the Pavilion in Sanford.Hermance was born in Ham-Nord, Quebec on April 18, 1917 to Philippe and Ernestine (LaRose) Ruel. Her family moved to the United States when she was a child eventually settling in Biddeford where she grew up, attending St. Joseph's School and St. Joseph's High School.Hermance and her first husband, Fred, owned and operated Guay's Market for 10 years before relocating to their farm in Shapleigh. Later they went into business operating Guay's Hideaway which they ran until 1970. Hermance was a devout Catholic and had been a communicant of St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, and prior, Notre Dame Church where she had served as a Eucharistic minister. She had also been a member of the Ladies of St. Anne and the Daughters of Isabella. She enjoyed making crafts which she would often donate to be sold at the church fairs. She also enjoyed traveling and wintered for many years in Florida. Hermance was a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be remembered as a kind and loving woman and will be dearly missed by her family and friends.Hermance was predeceased by her first husband, Fred Guay in 1974 and by her second husband, Lucien Guay in 1991.Surviving are her step-children, Gisele Dolbec and her husband Maurice of North Berwick and Dennis Guay and his wife Jane of Sanford; four grandchildren, Timothy Poisson of Biddeford, Jason Festino and his spouse Paul of Old Orchard Beach, Jennifer Hunt and her spouse David of Danvers, MA and Jill Arel and her spouse Brian of South Portland; four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 4th at St. Therse of Lisieux Parish, Notre Dame Church, located on Payne Street in Springvale. Interment will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Biddeford.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the York County Shelter, P.O. Box 820, Alfred Maine 04002.
