Herbert A. Stone, 82, a lifelong resident of Sanford, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Friday May 30, 2014. He was born in Sanford on October 22, 1931 a son of the late Joseph and Florence (Holbrook) Stone. He graduated from Sanford High School in 1952. Following graduation he enlisted and served in the US Navy.In 1954 he married Shirley Yates in Rochester, NH. He attended and graduated from the Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute. In 1971 he started H.A. Stone & Sons, to this day a family owned business specializing in fencing. In 1986 he retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard with 26 years of service.Herbert was involved with town affairs for many years serving as Town Selectman nine years and serving on the Finance Committee for four years.He enjoyed camping, family gatherings and doing woodworking in his shop.He is predeceased by his parents as well as one brother, William Stone.He will be deeply missed by his wife of 60 years, Shirley Stone of Sanford, children, Larry Stone and his wife, Linda of Sanford, David Stone of Springvale, Brian Stone and his wife, Barbara of Alfred, Dennis Stone and his wife, Karen of Sanford, Linda Demers and her husband, Jerry of Lyman, Kevin Stone and his wife, Lori of Lebanon, Ronnie Stone of Sanford, 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, one brother, George Stone and his wife, Pat of Sanford, sisters, Zelda Poliquin of Sanford and Winnie Gilbert of Acton, sister in law, Barbara Yates of Alferd.The family would like to thank Beacon Hospice for the care they provided as well as Dr. William F. Frank, MD his physician of 30 years and nurse Barb Stone for the care and attention given to their husband and dad.Visiting hours will be on Tuesday from 4 to 8PM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.
