Herbert S. Hartley

Falmouth- Herbert S. Hartley, 89, of Applegate Lane, died peacefully on Monday, January 23, 2017 at his home with his loving family by his side. Hebert was born September 5, 1927, raised in Larchmont, NY and attended Mamaroneck High School. He went on to Cornell University, where his studies were interrupted by military service. After the conclusion of WW II, he returned to Cornell under the GI Bill and received his engineering degree with the class of 1949. Herb spent the following seventeen years with General Electric, both domestic and abroad. He lived and worked in Europe for twenty one years including his service as senior executive for ITT, Vice President for the Continental Can Corporation of Europe and CEO of the Swiss Company Gema. In 1966 he married Ingrid Tietje, who was born and raised in Amsterdam. They resided in Brussels for over ten years where their two sons were born. Subsequently they moved to Switzerland before returning to the USA in 1986 to make their home in Falmouth, ME. Herb was involved in many local activities, served the State of Maine as Director of International Business Development and was a part-time faculty member at USM and St. Josephs College, teaching international business, marketing and strategic planning courses. His hobbies included traveling, photography, writing and sports, with heavy emphasis on skiing. Herb is survived by his wife, of more than fifty years, Ingrid Hartley of Falmouth; two sons Hilary and his wife Maryanne Hartley of CT, Terry and his wife Susan B. Hartley of NH; three grandchildren Finlay OHara of RI, Amelie Hartley and Sylvie Hartley both of CT; a brother Thomas L. Hartley of NY. At Herbs request all services will be private.
