Hazel P. White, 90, of Shapleigh, passed away on Monday, November 30, 2009 at the Newton Center in Sanford with her family by her side after a long illness.Hazel was born in Sanford on March 1, 1919 to William and Ada (Gowen) Pray and attended local schools, graduating from Sanford High School in 1936. In 1939 she married Norman White and together the couple raised four children. Hazel was always a very hard worker. She was rewarded for this when before graduating high school she was trained as a burler and mender for the Goodall Mills in Sanford, which was a very high paying job for the day. Later she worked as a bookkeeper and her husband's helpmate for the family dairy farm. She also worked as a bookkeeper for the White's Farm Store and for White's Logging.Hazel lived her life for her family. She loved to host family gatherings for the holidays and other get-togethers. She was good with her hands and enjoyed doing many different crafts. She also loved watching football and continued to watch it even after she became a resident of the Pavilion. Hazel will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Hazel was predeceased by her parents, three brothers, Donald Pray, Kenneth Pray and Charlie Pray and a sister, Mildred Dumont.Surviving are her husband of 70 years, Norman E. White of Shapleigh; a daughter, Elaine Keif and her husband Richard of Deltona, Florida; three sons, Glenn White and his wife Colleen of Shapleigh, David White and his wife Sandy of Shapleigh and Allen White of Shapleigh; a sister, Eva White of Shapleigh; a brother, George Pray of Lebanon; 15 grandchildren, Jeffrey Keif, Jennifer Keif, Brian Keif, Rebecca Keif, Sarah Percy, Glenn White Jr., Hollie Sitterly, Kevin White, Catherine Pomeroy, Kara Metcalf, Benjamin White, Jacob White, Katie White, Nick White and Kimberly White and 16 great-grandchildren.Visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, December 4th at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street in Springvale. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 10:00 AM on Saturday, December 5th, interment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery in Sanford.The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff of the Newton Center and the Pavilion for the love and care that they provided during Hazel's lengthy illness.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Newton Center and Pavilion Elder Care Activities Department, 35 June Street, Sanford, ME 04073.To leave a message of condolence for the family please click on the condolences tab to the left.
