Resided in: South Portlad, Maine

South Portland-Hazel Constance Stewart St. Cyr, age 87, of South Portland passed away peacefully on October 21, 2023 at her home following a period of declining health. Hazel was born June 7, 1936 in Portland, Maine the middle daughter of Herbert Stewart and Ruth MacMillan Stewart. Hazel attended South Portland Schools. She met her first love, Jerry St. Cyr, during her high school years. Hazel and Jerry were married on May 16, 1953 and went on to have three children. Hazel and Jerry raised their family in the Country Gardens neighborhood in South Portland. Hazel wore many hats throughout her lifetime. She began as a devoted homemaker and later became an inspirational Weight Watcher instructor. Transitioning into the world of insurance, she worked at Brooks Insurance Agency. Hazel then pursued her passion for beauty, becoming a licensed Cosmetologist and an instructor at Head Hunter II School of Hair Design. She continued to share her talents as a licensed beautician until the age of 70. Hazel was a self-taught crochet and knitting enthusiast. She made beautiful, quality gifts and was quick to share her creations with others. We would be remiss if we did not mention what an excellent cook and baker she was. As time passed, Hazel explored new passions and joined several cribbage clubs. She happily traveled with friends out of state to play in tournaments. Closer to home, Hazel played at Gritty's every Monday night for many years. This past Spring was her last time playing with the Gritty’s Gang in Portland. A special shout out to this group of people she loved. My sister and I want to thank all of you for the kindness you showed to our Mother. Hazel also loved the casino! She would spend hours there and just loved everything about the place; the lights, the sounds, the action! Hazel was predeceased by her parents, her sisters, Patricia Karst and Lillian ‘Hoodie’ Marcoux, her husband Jerry and son, Donald. Hazel is survived by two loving daughters and wonderful sons-in-law, Sylvia and her husband Tom and daughter Courtney; Monique and her husband Steve and their children Chloe and Sam. We would also like to acknowledge and thank our Mother’s friend Peter, who was a gift to her as well as a steadfast companion these last several years. Thank you Peter. Thank you to Hospice of Southern Maine for the care you extended to make her final weeks at home possible. Hazel was very giving. In her memory, please consider performing a random act of kindness in her honor. Kindness is a gift everyone can afford to give. Burial will be private. A Celebration of Hazel’s life will be held at Dimillo’s Restaurant, Commercial Street, Portland, Maine on Friday, November 3rd, 2023 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Arrangements are under the direction of the Conroy-Tully Walker Funeral home, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. I am so sorry to hear of Hazels passing. I met Hazel years ago at Bingo Time bingo. We became wonderful friends. She actually took my on my first trip to Foxwoods. I’ll never forget getting on the bus to return home. She was digging through her handy little bag she always wore around her neck lol I said Hazel what are you looking for?! She said the money I won. She could not find it. While I was ready to pull the bus over and head back to find it. I’ll never forget her words she said oh so often ‘it’s ok dear’ she did end up finding her winnings and we traveled safely home. I’ll never forget the memories we made. I had just seen her and Peter at the casino. I’m so glad we did. You’ll never be forgotten, Hazel. Til we meet again ❤️

  2. One evening when I got home from work, my neighbor Hazel called me as soon as I walked in the door. Hazel called me often, especially to ask “Are the Red Sox playing today?” and “What channel are they on?! I can’t find it!”. When I saw her name on the caller ID, I figured that’s what it was about. Instead, Hazel said “Honey, can you please come over here for a minute?” A little concerned I went right over. Hazel prepared for me a wonderful roast pork dinner and had it all packed for me to take home! I truly loved my neighbor and friend Hazel. She was always so thoughtful in ways like that. I’ve come to know her loving daughters, Monique and Sylvia. Such a wonderful and caring family. Hazel will be deeply missed by all. May God watch over her family and keep Hazel by his side.

  3. I’m so sorry for your loss. Your mom was such a great friend to my mom Renee DePrez and my father Dee DePrez for many years. She was was a gracious, special person and I’m sure she will be missed by many❤️ My thoughts are with your family.

  4. Hazel was a wonderful lady who we enjoyed spending time with ! She was a great companion to my Dad, Peter, she was a treasure. Condolences to the family

  5. I met Hazel at country line dancing and then we did country couples dancing . Hazel was a fabulous dancer and we had many fun times along with both her and my friend Sandra. When Hazel and my future bride started dancing they became great friends and when we got married in Stillwater Minnesota both Hazel and Sandra came out to the wedding which made it even more fun and when we came home Hazel had a party at her place in Bridgeton for all the gang we danced with. I could go on with more stories but I will just say I was blessed to have known Hazel and will remember her forever.

  6. Hazel….there are a lot of stories I could share but here are a couple. She was such a giver: Soon after she started playing ACC cribbage she showed up at a tournament with a beautiful Vera purse and wallet for me (my first). She said “Honey you were the first person to speak with me at a tournament, and were so kind to me”. It was so like Hazel to recognize this.
She was fun: Hazel road to many out of state tournaments with us. Did we laugh on these rides, the stories she told! Many times on the way home we would stop for dinner.
Our grandchildren are the happy owners of Christmas stockings she made them with their names on them
We loved Hazel and the times we were lucky enough to spend with her. She was a vey special lady!
Our greatest sympathy Sylvia and Monique…thinking of you and your family.
    Love-
    Laurie and Jerry

  7. We will miss seeing Hazel every Monday at cribbage, hearing her say Hi Honey and having our weekly chats.
I was very fortunate to receive some of her hand knitted creations, which I will cherish forever, the hand knitted Santa Stocking is the center piece on my mantle.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time.
    Love Alan & Lesley Pugsley

  8. So sorry to hear of Hazel’s passing the last time I talked with her she was having alot of problems with her knees and one of her eyes. she said she would love to go to Oxford but wasnt feeling up to it. She was always on the go and always ready to help a friend. SO So sorry girls for your loss

  9. Hazel was very grandmotherly to all of us young players at cribbage tournaments. Got to know us all on a personal level. Ever observant, a great listener. Her presence will never be replaced, or forgotten.
