Hazel M. Chadbourne

Portland- Hazel M. (Brown) Chadbourne, 86 passed away on March 27, 2017 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, with her loving family by her side.Hazel resided in Portland with her daughter and son in law Jeri and Roger Levesque, in the home she and her late husband had built in 1956. She was born in Portland on August 3, 1930, to the late Myrle W. and Eunice (Tinker) Brown. As a young child, she attended Chestnut Street Church and was recognized for never missing a Sunday in eight years.Hazel started working in the kitchen of Maine Medical Center when she was 13 years old. By the time she was 15, she had a second job at Holmes Stickney and Walker Shoe Factory on Lowell St. in Portland. Then onto H.P. Hood on Walton Street, working in production, packing ice cream and making ice cream cones. Hazel got laid off from H.P. Hood and went to work at F.W. Woolworth food counter. She went back to work with H.P. Hood when the managers from H.P. Hood came to see her and told her she had her job back. On August 21, 1948, she married the love of her life, Howard J. Butch Chadbourne Sr., who passed away on May 1, 2015. In August 2015, they would have celebrated 67 Years of marriage. Together they made their home in Libbytown, where they raised six children. A homemaker, Hazel was very active in her childrens and grandchildrens events and sporting events. Throughout the years, she helped her late husband and sons during Boy Scout trips, served as Treasurer of the PTA at West School, helped organize events, served as Treasurer of the Stroudwater Baptist Church, was a former member of Ladies of the Elks Club, Emblem Club, member of the Shriners Hillbillys who worked at the Shriners Hospital. She was also a member of the American Legion Harold T. Andrews Post #17 Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Hazel loved traveling around the country with her late husband in their RV. For years they resided in Bradenton, FL., in the winter months, returning to Maine in the spring, living on Highland Lake in Windham. She loved to dance; watching her on the dance floor with her late husband was beautiful. While in Florida, she enjoyed square dancing, line dancing and clogging. She was the youngest of five children. Hazel was predeceased by her parents; three sisters, Mrs. Frances (Richard) Day, Mrs. Hester (Fred) Legere, Mrs. Catherine (Dudley) Lovely; and her brother, Mr. Harvard Brown. She is survived by her six children: Howard J. (Denise) Chadbourne Jr., Teri L. (Paul) Adams, Jan-marie (Michael) McCarthy, Charles E. (Traci) Chadbourne, Jeri L. (Roger) Levesque and David M. Chadbourne; 12 Grandchildren, Richard Chadbourne, Amy Adams (Johnny) Sheppard, Andrew Adams, Rachel McCarthy (Christopher) Berry, Nicole McCarthy (Matthew) DeOrio, Megan McCarthy (Matthew) Chason, Rebecca McCarthy (Ryan) Hall, Kristi McCarthy, Kimberly Chadbourne, Chelsea Levesque (Gregory) Collupy, Sara Levesque and her significant other Michael Coyne and Sydney Levesque; nine great-grandchildren, with another on the way; and several nieces and nephews. Hazel was very fond of the Brett and Lambert families. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of both the Southern Maine Dialysis for the compassionate care they gave to Hazel the past nine years, and to the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for making her final days so comfortable. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, March 30 from 4-6PM at the Conroy-Tully WalkerFuneral Home, 172 State Street, Portland followed by a Celebration of Hazels Life at 6PM. Interment will be held on Friday, March 31 at 1PM at Brooklawn Memorial Park, Congress Street, Portland.
