Gladys M. Waddington
Gladys M. Waddington, 94, of Sanford, died October 21 at the Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford.She was born in Sanford on August 29, 1914, a daughter of Edward and Elsie (Harrison) Gillings. She attended Sanford schools, was a 1932 graduate of Sanford High School, a 1936 graduate of Bates College in Lewiston, and attended the Colby College Institute of Church Music.Gladys was the widow of Jack Waddington to whom she had been married for 63 years. She worked for many years as a schoolteacher at Sanford Junior High School and Sanford High School. She also taught in Mapleton and in Franklin. A longtime member of the North Parish Congregational Church, and a former member of the Sanford United Methodist Church, she had been the organist for both congregations. In more recent years, she joined the Acton Congregational Church, UCC while residing with her son in Acton.Gladys was active in the Searchlight Club, the College Club, the Nevin Music Group and the H. D. Goodall Hospital Auxiliary.Survivors include a son Wayne Waddington of Englewood, FL, son David Waddington and his wife Theresa of Acton, daughter Sylvia Morrill and her husband Eldon of Fenton, MI, sister Phyllis Mitchell and her husband Roger of Sanford, 8 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.A memorial service will be held on Sunday at 11:45 AM at the Acton Congregational Church, UCC with the Rev. Peter Mercer officiating.The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Southern Maine Medical Center and the Kennebunk Rehab Center for the love and care shown Gladys during her illness.Arrangements are under the direction of the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street, Springvale.
