Giovanni John Profenno

SCARBOROUGH - Giovanni "John" Profenno, 88, of Black Point Road, died Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough with his loving wife and family by his side. John was born in Portland, Maine on August 19, 1925 the son of Peter and Antoinette Profenno. He attended local schools. John enlisted and served in the United States Navy during World War II where he served as a gunner on the U.S.S. Andromeda. On January 10, 1958 John married Mary K."Katie" Ferrar in Cape Elizabeth, where together they made their home and raised their family. After returning from the war John went to work as a welder at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. After retiring he worked part-time for many years at the Inn by the Sea where he was responsible for maintaining the swimming pool. John was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign War Post #832 in South Portland. John is predeceased by a sister Camilla Profenno and a brother Anthony Profenno; he is survived by his wife Katie of Scarborough; six daughters Diana and her husband Samuel Flint of South Portland, Kathy and her husband Harold Young III of Cape Elizabeth, Sherry and her husband Thomas Flemming of Ohio, Thereasa Profenno of New Hampshire, Nancy and her husband Larry Thompson of New Gloucester and Jamie Profenno of Scarborough; three sons Joseph and his wife Brenda Hachey of Alabama, Steven Hachey of Gorham and John Profenno and his wife Mary Rollo of South Portland; two sisters Nancy Kashinsky and Anna Boswell both of Portland; one brother Peter and his wife Mary Profenno of Portland; 15 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, March 21, 2014 from 11:00am to 12:00pm at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, followed by a 12:00pm service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Broadway, South Portland.
