George R. Porter, 90, of Sanford, passed away on Wednesday January 20, 2016 at the Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford. He was born on June 23, 1925 a son of the late Harry and Delvine (Lessard) Porter. He served in the US Army during WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart.He worked as an electrician and retired from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. A lifelong communicant of the Catholic Parish Community he was active in the St. Ignatius Parish Guild and was instrumental in organizing parish dances in the 80's and 90's. He was an active member of the Springvale Knights of Columbus Council #2755, having served as Grand Knight and Past Grand Knight. He belonged to the Sanford American Legion Post and also served as Institutional Representative for the Boy Scout Troop 327 from 1982 until 1988. When not keeping busy as the neighborhood handyman, George and Jeanne enjoyed travel; always keeping their options open to attend a dance. George was normally up for a casual golf game or tennis match with friends.He is predeceased by his parents as well as one brother, Henry Porter, step brother, Gene Paquin, daughter, Roxane Hulen.He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jeanne (Arsenault) Porter, one son, Blaine Porter and his wife, Kathy, grandson, Rick Porter and his wife, Leticia, granddaughter, Lora MacDonald and her husband, Parker, two great grandchildren, Rachel and Christopher Porter.Visiting hours will be on Tuesday, January 26th from 6 to 8PM at the Lafrance-Lambert & Black Funeral Home, 29 Winter Street, Sanford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11AM at St. Therese of Lisieux Parish, Holy Family Church. Burial with military honors will be conducted in the spring at St. Ignatius Cemetery.In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his memory to The Pavilion, Alzheimer's Association, 35 July Street, Sanford, ME 04073.
