Dr. George Annand Faulkner Jr., of Land's End, Cape Porpoise passed away after a brief illness on April 15th in St. Petersburg, Florida with his wife Elizabeth, at his side.He was born to George A. and Mildred (Jordan) Faulkner in Augusta on August 23, 1922. As a small child the family moved to Winter Harbor to be near his mother's family, the Jordans and as a teenager he moved to Ellsworth where he attended and graduated from Ellsworth High School. After attending the University of Maine, he entered the Army during World War II. Selected for the Army Dental Corp program, he attended and graduated from Tufts Dental School. As the war had ended by the time of his graduation, he was released from his military obligation. Employed by the State of Maine in the Dental Program, he worked in a mobile dental unit that traveled to the rural areas and Indian reservations in the state. It was while employed by the State of Maine that he met his future wife, Elizabeth Davis of Sanford, a dental hygienist, also employed by the state's Dental Program. With the birth of their first child George III, Dr. Faulkner settled in and started a dental practice in Sanford. Called back into the Army at the beginning of the Korean Conflict, Dr. Faulkner, with his wife and now three sons, served at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas and with the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, North Carolina where his fourth son, John, was born.Returning to Maine, the Faulkners settled on Oak Street in Alfred where their children remember a wonderful childhood spent in a home filled with happy memories. Dr. Faulkner spent countless hours with his children, always at their sporting and school events, skiing at Saddleback Mountain in Rangeley, summers at Mousam Lake in Shapleigh, and on cross county trips across the United States and Canada as far as Alaska. A favorite of his twelve grandchildren, he took great pride in their accomplishments.With his wide circle of friends, the Faulkners traveled throughout United States, Europe and Africa, played golf in Hawaii, Prince Edward Island and at St. Andrews in Scotland, and went on ski trips to Colorado. A favorite of his golfing friends was the Annual Fall Open hosted by the Faulkners for their friends at the Mingo Springs Golf Club in Rangeley.After his family and friends, another great passion was his ancestral home on the Minas Basin in Economy, Nova Scotia where his family received the original land grants from King George III in 1767. He and his children restored the antique farm house and after his retirement he spent summers there as his father did before him.Dr. Faulkner was a member of the Alfred School Board and a past president of the Sanford Kiwanis Club. He was a Past Master of the Fraternal Lodge #55 AF & AM in Alfred and was a member of the Scottish Rite and of the Kora Shrine of Lewiston. In 1978 he was selected by Governor Joseph Brennan to the Maine Board of Dental Examiners and the Northeast Regional Board of Dental Examiners. Until last year he participated in the examination programs at dental schools in the Northeast. Dr. Faulkner is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elizabeth (Davis) Faulkner of Cape Porpoise; children, George A. III and his wife, Deborah (Mayne) of Jackson, James M. and his wife Nancy (Crockett) of Cape Porpoise, Richard D. and his wife, Suzanne (Morin) of Sanford, John E. and his wife, Jane (Chadbourne) of Sanford, Jane E. of Cape Porpoise and Joanne (Faulkner) Houston of Sanford; grandchildren, Kristen, Jeffrey, Andrew, Sadie, Michael, Matthew, Tyler, Brendan and Masha Faulkner; Amanda, Sarah and Cameron Houston; two great-grandsons, Keegan and Kaiser Faulkner; a brother, James M. Faulkner, of Ellsworth, a sister Joyce (Faulkner) Hotchkiss of Orange, Conn and a niece, Sara J. Hotchkiss of Waldoboro. He was predeceased in 2005 by his son, Peter.Visiting hours will be held on Friday, April 27 at 10 AM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main Street in Springvale, followed by a service at 12 noon with Pastor Jim McAtee of the Curtis Lake Christian Church officiating. Ritualistic services by the Fraternal Lodge #55 AF & AM will also be held.
