Geneva L. Brackett, 90, of Springvale, died on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at the Greenwood Center in Sanford.Geneva was born in Berwick on March 21, 1921 to Jasper and Hazel (Meader) Guptill where she grew up and attended local schools, graduating from North Berwick High School. On October 30, 1943 she married Switzer Brackett and together they raised five children. During her working life she was employed at Aletta Dress Shop in Sanford as well as a shoe shop in Springvale.Geneva was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother who devoted herself to taking care of her family. She was a very accepting woman and enjoyed socializing with her family and friends. She possessed a strong work ethic which she passed on to her children. Geneva was an excellent seamstress and cook and enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening. She was also a talented musician who liked playing both the piano and the organ. She will be remembered as a kind a loving woman who was devoted to her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends.Geneva was predeceased by her husband, Switzer Brackett, a brother, Stanley Guptill, two sisters, Olive Lindsey and Evelen Blair and three grandchildren, Justin Gagnon, Joanne Brackett and Becky Brackett.Surviving are five children, Reverend Dr. Linwood Welch and his wife Arlene of Rockland, Rodney Brackett and his wife Dianne of Sanford, Carol Bartlett and her husband Paul of Londonderry, NH, Alvin Brackett and his wife Susan of Sanford and Wade Brackett and his wife Sharon of Sanford; 15 grandchildren, Keith Welch, Craig Welch, Kimberly Grover, Ann Thayer, Amy McEwen, Jonathan Brackett, Emily Fortier, John Kieffer, Kathleen Grondine, Jeffrey Bartlett, Suzanne Bartlett, Megan Brackett, Marissa Berard, Michael Brackett, Deb Sousa; 16 great-grandchildren, and two siblings, Donald Guptill and his wife Ida of Berwick and Eleanor Hayes of Tucson, AZ.Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 30th from 9:00 to 10:00 AM with a funeral service at 10:00 AM at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home located at 580 Main Street in Springvale. Committal prayers will follow at 1:00 PM at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel located on Mount Vernon Road in Augusta.
