Gary Louis Darling

April 6, 1950 ~ September 20, 2015
South Portland-Gary L. Darling, of South Portland, transitioned on to heaven surrounded by his loving family after his courageous battle with cancer ended on Sept. 20, 2015. He was born on April 6, 1950 in Portland, ME to Louis A. and Anita M. (Violette) Darling. Much to his disappointment he was an only child, who later married Kimberly A. (Deakin) Darling in 1970, also an only child, thus his wish to be an uncle was never fulfilled. Along the way, Gary Kim embraced other peoples children as their own nieces and nephews in order to fill that hole. Gary graduated from South Portland High School in 1968. He then went on to enlist in the Navy during the Vietnam War, where he served as a 1st class salvage diver. His duty to his country was strong and he wore his uniform proudly. Later in life he came to enjoy the comaradery of fellow veterans he met at the the VFW Post 832 in South Portland. In 1973, after the service, he went to work for W. L. Blake Supply Company. From there he went on to work for plumbing companies Gerber and Miles. He then decided to change over to industrial fire protection companies installing sprinkler systems beginning with Carvel. He moved onto Capital then Girard and finally found his home at Eastern Fire Protection, where he happily stayed for 33 years. He felt more like family at Eastern than an employee and he made many dear and enduring friendships. Gary was a hopeless romantic, who loved to wax poetic around an evening fire and serenade you with ballads of old. Once in a while, someone special passes through your life and leaves a mark on your soul. Gary was that sort of guy. Whether it be singing to you on bended knee in the middle of a crowded restaurant or regaling you with a plethora of entertaining and hilarious stories at the annual Clam Festival party. Another favorite of Garys was to gift you with one of his famous iambic pentameter poems, which usually contained words he invented to complete the rhyme. Gary was a Harley driving, fun loving character, who brought joy and laughter into any room he entered. He valued his friends and genuinely cared about their wellbeing. Those friendships were for life. Gary felt a burden for suffering children, whether it be physically, emotionally, or financially and his generosity extended far beyond his wallet. Camp Susan Curtis was especially near and dear to his heart. Above all else, he enjoyed sharing the accomplishments of his children and grandchildren to anyone that would listen. He made sure they had a solid foundation spiritually, culturally and academically by affording them many adventurous experiences. The world will be a little duller without his gregarious presence. Surviving are the love of his life Kimberly A. (Deakin) Darling, a son Christopher A. Darling and his wife Heidi of Lovell and their children Benjamin, Samuel Madeline, a daughter Amy R. Freese and her husband Richard of South Portland and their children Emily Abigail. Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2015 from 9:00-11:00am at the Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. A Memorial Service will follow at the chapel at 11:00am. Burial will be private. Gary, as neighbors go you’re the best of the best of them! You were always there with a helping hand, support or just by being Gary Darling with your larger than life personality and you ALWAYS made Marty and I & later our children, Lisa & Ryan, feel welcomed to The Farnell Drive “family” (now Rogers Rd) neighborhood when we moved in across the street as newlyweds in 1984! Your yard was always the most FUN to watch and entertaining throughout the holidays and especially during Clam Fest Week! We always knew when Gary was home our night air filled with your rich aromatic bonfires on many nights, or as your hopeless romantic side would teased us calling it “the LOVE nest” lol May God Bless you and may heavenly embers continue to burn in remembrance of you Gary Darling! Your presence on Rogers Road will forever be missed by the McAleer family! Lori, Marty, Lisa & Ryan… Our deep and sincere condolences to Kim, Chris & Amy & their families…

I grew up with Gary but have actually not seen him since the day we graduated! But I do have fond memories of him. He was so much fun to be around. So down to earth. A true gentleman. It sounds like he lived a life full of happiness. I’m so sorry to hear that he was sick before he passed. My heart goes out to his family.

Gary has been such a dear friend to me for many years. I am going to miss him so very much. He adored Kim, his children and grandchildren so much and we shared stories daily. He also loved his Eastern family and Bungie has left his mark here. It will not be the same here for me without him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

My heart goes out to Kim, Amy, Christopher & family! The world is truly a more dull place without this dear sweet man in it! Thankfully Kass & I got to see Gary when I was in Maine this past June. I had the ultimate pleasure of working with Gary for 13 + years at Eastern Fire Protection/Eastern Fire Services. He introduced himself that first day to me as the company eccentric. Through the years he taught me many things about the sprinkler business as well as many others he worked with. We were privileged with his poetry and stories as well as shared our own with him. We were an extended family at Eastern branching into each others home lives. Gary always had me proof read things for him and fix that awful copier. It really liked to mess with him. He was always simply wonderful with my children and they will forever hold fond memories of him with them. They referred to him as their Eastern Uncle Gary Darling. May he eternally soar on the wings of an angel and may heaven know the light that he brings. Belinda, Kass & Chris
