Frederick A. Sholler
Frederick Albert Sholler, 86, of Lebanon, died Monday Sept. 23, 2019 at home after a long illness. He was born on April 23, 1933, in Merrill, Aroostook County, Maine the son of Percy and Mae (Furrow) Sholler. Fred was raised by his grandparents Maynard and Gertrude, on the family potato farm in the Merrill/Oakfield area in the shadow of Sholler Mountain named after his great great grandfather (a Civil War veteran) and one of the original settlers of the area. Fred was a 1950 graduate of Oakfield High School where he played basketball, baseball and was a member of Future Farmers of America. After high school he attended Aroostook State Teachers College and Husson College. During this time, Fred worked one summer as a foreman in the construction of Limestone Air Force Base. He then enlisted in the United States Army where he rose to the rank of Sergeant. Upon discharge, he relocated to Connecticut where two events that would define his future occurred. He began a successful career in manufacturing and he was also introduced to his future wife of 63 years, Hettie Gould in what Fred often described as a "love at first sight moment." They were married on May 4th 1956 and remained utterly and uncompromisingly devoted to one another for every second of every day of those 63 years. "Uncompromised devotion" defined Fred's approach to everything he did. He was devoted to his God and his family above all else. Fred's family grew from two to six. Sons David, Dwayne, Daniel and daughter Diane Sholler were born and raised by this exceptional couple. After moving back to Maine, Fred enjoyed much success working as a Process Engineer for American Cyanamid in Sanford where he was awarded a patent for an innovation in plastic manufacturing. He subsequently moved to Vulcan Electric in Kezar Falls as Materials and Production Control Manager. After this he started his own business in sales as a manufacturing representative. Fred then became a Century 21 Broker where he continued his successful professional career, receiving awards as top agent in the state for listings and sold units as well as being in the top three percent in national sales for three consecutive years. Having grown up in "The County" with fishing and hunting being the most available recreation, Fred became a renowned fisherman and hunter; teaching his children, grandchildren and friends how to read the water where the big brook trout lurk, recognize the sunlight gleaming from a hidden buck's antler and knowing which thicket is most likely to harbor a partridge. Fred was tragically predeceased by sons Daniel in1974 and Dwayne in 2017. He is survived by his wife, Hettie, son David and wife Nancy of Wells, daughter Diane Brazier and husband Clark of Greenville, South Carolina and several grandchildren.
