Frederick G. Pierce, 91, a longtime Waterboro resident, passed away after a period of declining health on Tuesday, September 26, 2017.Fred was born in Newton, Massachusetts on April 20, 1926, the son of Lewis and Katherine Pierce. He graduated from Newton High School in 1943 and shortly thereafter he enlisted in the Navy, where he served as a radio operator on two different ships in both the Pacific and American Theaters.After being honorably discharged in May of 1946, he took advantage of the GI Bill and began his undergraduate studies. He married Ruth "Pinky" Tromm in Altoona, Pennsylvania in 1947. In 1950, he graduated from the University of Massachusetts and moved to Waterboro.Fred worked as a as a poultry farmer and was an active member of the York County Poultry Association. In addition, he drove a school bus for several years and later served on the Waterboro School Committee for nine years. He returned to school and received his teaching degree and then taught fifth grade in North Berwick for six years and sixth grade in Sanford for another six years. After receiving his Master's Degree at USM, he served as assistant principal at Sanford Middle School for 15 years, retiring in 1987.Fred was an avid golfer, cribbage player and reader. He enjoyed going to cribbage tournaments in New England and Florida. In recent years he played cribbage twice a month at the town hall as well as a few games each evening before bedtime. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.As a 64 year member, Fred was especially devoted to the Fraternal Lodge of Masons where he served as Worshipful Master in 1958 followed by many years as secretary and chaplain. He was a member of Fern Chapter #139 Order of Eastern Star and the Brown-Emmons Post of the American Legion.Fred was predeceased by Pinky, his wife of 42 years, and later by his companion of 23 years, Ruth Goodwin.He is survived by three children, Linda DeWitt and her husband George of Waterboro, Kathy Terhune and her husband Stephen of Naples and Charles (Chuck) Pierce and his wife Patrice of Waterboro; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, his sister, Dorothy Valenti of Mesa, Arizona and several nieces and nephews.Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, September 29th at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home located at 580 Main Street in Springvale. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, September 30th at 9:00 AM. Interment will be at the Pine Grove Cemetery in South Waterboro.Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider sending a memorial contribution in Fred's name to the Waterboro Public Library, P.O. Box 308, East Waterboro, Maine 04030 or Fraternal Lodge #55, P.O.
