Frederick M. Flannery
Frederick "Archie" M. Flannery, 76, of Wells, died Friday, December 28, 2007 surrounded by his family at York Hospital in York, ME. Archie was born in Natick, Massachusetts on May 15, 1931 to Stanley and Mary Rousseau Flannery. He attended schools in Saxonville and Hopkinton, MA, and received an honorary high school diploma from Wells High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1949 to 1951 in Korea and was a Bronze Star recipient. He worked as a supervisor for 36 years at Weston Nurseries in Hopkinton, MA. Because he spoke fluent Spanish, the company would send him to Puerto Rico annually to recruit workers for the nursery. Archie was a very hard worker and took great pride in everything that he did. He was once featured on the cover of "Horticultural Magazine." In 1992, Archie moved to Maine, settling in Wells. He was very handy and a talented carpenter and licensed builder. He put these skills to good use, building his new home himself, from the ground up. The outdoors was always a special place for Archie, regardless of the weather. He enjoyed fishing, working around the house and just about any activity that would bring him outdoors. He was a lover of animals, raising a variety of farm animals throughout his life. Archie was also a big fan of "country and western music." Family gatherings were always a special time. He enjoyed spending time with his family and particularly enjoyed his grandchildren. He had a wonderful sense of humor, possessing a unique ability to find something funny in almost any situation. Archie had most recently been working on a farm in South Berwick, restoring the 19th century barn and farmhouse as well as landscaping the property. He will be remembered as a very hard working man as well as a very kind and loving father, grandfather and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Archie was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Raymond and Stanley, Jr. and a sister, Joan. Surviving are two sons, Frederick Flannery, Jr. of Wells and Patrick Flannery of Biddeford; three daughters, Joy Sabatinelli and her husband Steven of Texas, Pam Barley and her husband Peter of Florida and Rachel Newman and her husband Rodger of Wells; granddaughters, Amanda Joy Newman and Emily Hope Newman and five other grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; former spouse, Bea Michaud of Old Orchard Beach; five brothers, Richard, Gene, Butch, Ernie and David and seven sisters, Mary, Barbara, Patricia, Kathy, Dorothy, Marlene and Maureen.
